The movie is based on the real life story of its co-writers – Pakistani American stand-up comedian, Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily V Gordan. The two meet at one of his shows and begin a relationship. Cultural differences pose a big problem to them, but a greater concern arise when Emily suddenly gets sick and is kept in a medically induced coma.
