Hugh Laurie was first seen in the television series ‘The Cellar Tapes’ in 1981. After appearing in television series and shows like ‘There's Nothing to Worry About!’ (1982), ‘Alfresco’ (1983), ‘The Crystal Cube’ (1983), and ‘The Young Ones’ (1984). He made his big-screen debut in the Fred Schepisi-directed drama film ‘Plenty’ where he played the role of ‘Michael.’ The film received mixed reviews from critics. He next starred in television series and shows like ‘Blackadder II’ (1986), ‘Filthy Rich & Catflap’ (1987), ‘Blackadder the Third’ (1987), ‘Blackadder's Christmas Carol’ (1988), and ‘Blackadder Goes Forth’ (1989). In 1989, he became a part of the British sketch comedy television series ‘A Bit of Fry & Laurie.’ The series aired 26 episodes before going off-air in 1995. He continued to appear in television series like ‘Jeeves and Wooster’ (1990-1993), ‘All or Nothing at All’ (1993), ‘Tracey Takes On…’ (1996), ‘Friends’ (1998), ‘The Bill’ (1998), ‘The Nearly Complete and Utter History of Everything’ (1999), ‘Randall and Hopkirk’ (2000), ‘Spooks’ (2002), and ‘Fortysomething’ (2003). In 2004, he joined the lead cast of the American medical drama television series ‘House’ created by David Shore. He portrayed Dr. Gregory House in the series which earned him several awards including 2 Golden Globe Awards and 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards. The series spawned 8 seasons and aired its final episode in 2012.
In 2008, he starred as ‘Captain James Biggs’ in the American action thriller film ‘Street Kings’ directed by David Ayer. While the film opened to mixed reviews, it managed to come out as a commercial success, grossing over $66.5 million on a budget of $20 million. He was next seen in films like ‘The Oranges’ (2011), ‘Mr. Pip’ (2012), ‘Tomorrowland’ (2015), ‘Holmes & Watson’ (2018), and ‘The Personal History of David Copperfield’ (2019). In 2020, he joined the main cast of the science fiction comedy television series, ‘Avenue 5’ where he grabbed the role of ‘Ryan Clark.’ The series was renewed for a second season in February 2020. He was last seen playing the role of ‘Dr. James Nicholson’ in the television series ‘Why Didn't They Ask Evans?’ in 2022.
