RuPaul made his debut in the 1987 low-budget underground film trilogy ‘RuPaul Is: Starbooty!’ directed by Jon Witherspoon. He went on to make his first television appearance in the American amateur talent contest ‘The Gong Show’ in 1988. He was next seen in television series and shows such as ‘Saturday Night Live’ (1993), ‘Sister, Sister’ (1994), and ‘In the House’ (1995). In 1996, he joined the American talk/variety show ‘The RuPaul Show’ as a presenter. The show aired 100 episodes before going off-air in 1998. He continued to appear in television series like ‘Hercules’ (1998), ‘Sabrina, the Teenage Witch’ (1998), ‘Popular’ (2001), ‘Port Charles’ (2001), ‘Son of the Beach’ (2002), ‘Top Chef: San Francisco’ (2006), and ‘Project Runway’ (2008). In 2009, he became a part of the American reality competition television series ‘RuPaul's Drag Race’ as a judge and presenter. The show’s 14th season premiered in January 2022. In 2010, RuPaul became a host of the American reality television series ‘RuPaul's Drag U.’ The series ran for 3 seasons before going off-air in 2012.Â
In 2012, he joined RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars, the spin-off series of the original ‘RuPaul's Drag Race,’ as a host and judge. The show has aired a total of 6 seasons. RuPaul has also appeared in television series and shows such as ‘Life With La Toya’ (2013), ‘Mystery Girls’ (2014), ‘Skin Wars’ (2014-2016), ‘Good Work’ (2015), ‘Gay for Play Game Show Starring RuPaul’ (2016-2017), ‘2 Broke Girls’ (2017), ‘Broad City’ (2017), ‘Drag Race Thailand’ (2018), ‘The Simpsons’ (2018), ‘The World's Best’ (2019), ‘RuPaul's Drag Race UK’ (2019-present), ‘AJ and the Queen’ (2020), ‘Earth to Ned’ (2020), ‘RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under’ (2021), and ‘Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway’ (2022). Apart from television, RuPaul has also appeared in several films such as ‘The Brady Bunch Movie’ (1995), ‘A Very Brady Sequel’ (1996), ‘EDtv’ (1999), ‘The Truth About Jane’ (2000), ‘Who is Cletis Tout?’ (2001), ‘Starrbooty’ (2007), and ‘Show Dogs’ (2018). In 2021, he starred as ‘Hannah Contour’ in the Christmas comedy film ‘The Bitch Who Stole Christmas’ directed by Don Scardino. The film featured 20 contestants from ‘RuPaul's Drag Race’ along with other celebrities.
