Mary Lucy Denise ‘Marilu’ Henner started her film career with the comedy drama ‘Between the Lines’ (1977), before which she starred in the original production ‘Grease’ (1971), and some Broadway productions.
Henner had a starring role in coming of age film ‘Bloodbrothers’ (1978). After her TV debut in the TV film ‘Off Campus’ (1977), she landed her breakthrough role as a single mother New York cabbie ‘Elaine Nardo’ in the award-winning sitcom ‘Taxi’ (1978-1983), which earned her 5 ‘Golden Globe’ nominations.
Henner played the lead in the neo-noir mystery film ‘Hammett’ (1982), followed by starring roles in the comedy film ‘The Man Who Loved Women’ (1983), the action comedy ‘Cannonball Run II’ (1984), the crime comedy film ‘Johnny Dangerously’ (1984), and the romantic drama film ‘Perfect’ (1988).
Henner’s supporting role in the satirical comedy ‘L.A. Story’ (1991) fetched her nomination for ‘American Comedy Award.’ She played lead as ‘Freddy Grand’ in thriller ‘Grand Larceny’ (1987). She also starred in several TV films, including ‘Stark’ (1985), ‘Channel 99’ (1988), ‘Lady Killers’ (1988), ‘Fight for Justice: The Nancy Conn Story’ (1995) as ‘Nancy Conn.’
Henner was cast in the main role as ‘Ava Newton’ in the sitcom ‘Evening Shade’ (1990-1994). She next acted in the crime drama ‘Chains of Gold’ (1991), comedies ‘Noises Off’ (1992), and ‘Chasers’ (1994), and the biographical comedy drama ‘Man on the Moon’ (1999).
In 1994, Henner had her own talk show ‘Marilu,’ and later hosted ‘America’s Ballroom Challenge’ (2006-2007) and ‘Shape Up Your Life’ (Discovery Channel) inspired from her books. She participated in several reality shows, including‘The Celebrity Apprentice’ (2008), ‘Grilling with the Stars: Live with Kelly’ (2012) and ‘Dancing with Stars’ (2016). She also appeared in several other TV series, including ‘ER,’ ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ ‘Unforgettable,’ ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine,’ ‘The Neighborhood,’ and more.
She voiced ‘Veronica Vreeland’ in the ‘Batman’ series of animated films.
