Samira Wiley attended the School of the Arts and trained herself in theater and acting, eventually making her acting debut in 2011 in the film ‘The Sitter,’ in which she played the role of ‘Tina.’ That same year, Samira also made her television debut in the police procedural drama series ‘Unforgettable.’
In the 2012 Paul Weitz-directed drama film ‘Being Flynn,’ Samira played the role of ‘Asha.’ The movie received mixed reviews from critics. In 2013, she starred as ‘Poussey Washington’ in the comedy-drama series ‘Orange Is the New Black.’ Samira earned critical acclaim for her performance and won the ‘Screen Actors Guild Award’ for ‘Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.’
She appeared in television series like ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’ (2015), ‘The Catch’ (2016), and ‘You're the Worst’ (2016-2019).
In 2017, Samira Wiley starred as ‘Moira Strand’ in the dystopian television series, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ which earned her a ‘Primetime Emmy Award’ for ‘Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.’ She will reprise her role as ‘Moira Strand’ in the fifth season of the show.
She also appeared in several other television series and shows, such as ‘Last Week Tonight With John Oliver’ (2017), ‘Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television’ (2017-2019), ‘Explained’ (2018-2021), ‘Drunk History’ (2019), ‘Love, Death & Robots’ (2019), and ‘Blade Runner: Black Lotus’ (2021).
Samira Williams has also appeared in films such as ‘Nerve’ (2016), ‘Detroit’ (2017), ‘Social Animals’ (2018), ‘Vault’ (2019), and ‘Breaking News in Yuba County’ (2021). She is all set to appear in the upcoming drama film ‘Red, White and Water.’
