Fred Willard was first seen in the episode "Quit Shootin' Folks" of the American Western sitcom ‘Pistols 'n' Petticoats’ in 1966. The following year, he made his big-screen debut in the American exploitation film ‘Teenage Mother,’ directed by Jerry Gross. He next appeared in television series such as ‘Get Smart’ (1968), ‘Premiere’ (1968), ‘Love, American Style’ (1970), ‘The Bob Newhart Show’ (1975), ‘Karen’ (1975), and ‘How to Break Up a Happy Divorce’ (1976). In 1976, he joined the cast of the American television sitcom ‘Sirota's Court.’ He played the role of ‘D.A Bud Nugent’ and remained a part of the series until it went off-air in 1977. In 1979, he starred as ‘Vincent Vanderhoff’ in the American comedy film ‘Americathon,’ directed by Neal Israel. The film received mostly negative reviews from critics. That same year, he participated in the American reality television series ‘Real People.’ The series aired its final episode in 1984.
He went on to star in television series and films such as ‘The History of White People in America’ (1985), ‘George Burns Comedy Week’ (1985), ‘What's Hot, What's Not’ (1985-1986) which earned him a ‘Daytime Emmy Award’ nomination, ‘D.C. Follies’ (1987-1989), ‘My Secret Identity’ (1988), ‘The Golden Girls’ (1991), ‘Dream On’ (1992), ‘The Ben Stiller Show’ (1993), and ‘Dave's World’ (1994). In 1995, he starred as ‘Scott’ in the American sitcom television series ‘Roseanne,’ created by Matt Williams and Roseanne Barr. He remained a part of the series until 1997. In 2000, he joined the cast of the American television film ‘The Pooch and the Pauper,’ directed by Alex Zamm. The film received mixed response from critics. That same year, he also starred in the mockumentary comedy film ‘Best in Show,’ directed by Christopher Guest. The film opened to critical acclaim with critics praising the performance of the cast. Willard also won the ‘Boston Society of Film Critics Award’ and ‘American Comedy Award’ for his performance in the film.
He was next seen in films like ‘The Wedding Planner’ (2001), ‘The Year That Trembled’ (2002), ‘American Wedding’ (2003), ‘Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle’ (2004), ‘Love Wrecked’ (2005), ‘Monster House’ (2006), ‘Epic Movie’ (2007), ‘WALL-E’ (2008), ‘Expecting Mary’ (2010), and ‘Scooby-Doo! In 2014, he joined the cast of the American television soap opera ‘The Bold and the Beautiful.’ He bagged the ‘Daytime Emmy Award’ for his performance and remained a part of the show until 2015. He next appeared in ‘Fifty Shades of Black’ (2016), ‘Blood Type’ (2018), and ‘Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics’ (2020). He was last seen in the 2021 television film ‘Captain Daddy’ where he played the role of ‘Daddy.’
