Robert William Troup Jr. aka Bobby Troup's first screen appearances (the musical romantic film ‘Duchess of Idaho’ (1950) and the romantic musical drama film ‘Mr. Imperium’ (1951) came in uncredited roles.
Thus, Troup’s debut movie was ‘Bop Girl Goes Calypso’ (1957) which featured ‘Bobby Troup Trio’s’ calypso music. He further appeared in comedy-film ‘The High Cost of Loving’ (1958), musical-film ‘The Five Pennies’ (1959) and as composer-bandleader ‘Tommy Dorsey’ in biopic of drummer Gene Krupa, ‘The Gene Krupa Story’ (1959). He played guest-roles on several TV-series including ‘Mr. Lucky,’ ‘Markham,’ ‘Raw Hide,’ ‘King of Diamonds, ‘Sam Benedict,’ ’77 Sunset Strip,’ as himself in ‘Acapulco’ and others.
Troup starred as ‘Lt. Overman’ in war-film ‘First to Fight’ (1967), followed by an uncredited role in drama-film ‘Banning’ (1967) and then drama-film ‘Number One’ (1969). After playing various roles in TV-series ‘Dragnet 1967’ (1967-1969) he appeared as ‘George Freeman’ in TV-movie ‘Dragnet 1966’ (1969). He played piano-player in two episodes of detective TV-series ‘Mannix’ (1969-1970) and was ‘staff sergeant Gorman’ in black-comedy war-film ‘M*A*S*H*’ (1970).
Troup was cast as ‘Dr. Joe Early,’ along with his wife Julie London as ‘Nurse Dixie,’ in action-adventure medical drama-series ‘Emergency’ (1972-1978) which brought him popularity. He appeared in same role in an episode of police-procedural TV-series ‘Adam-12’ (1972).
Troup further participated in ‘Celebrity Bowling’ (1973, 1975) and appeared in other TV-series such as ‘McMillan & Wife’ (1972), ‘Flying High’ (1978), ‘The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries’ (1978), ‘Fantasy Island’ (1978), ‘The Rebels’ (1979) and ‘Simon & Simon’ (1985).
