Martin Short made his screen debut in the Canadian youth television series, ‘Right On’ in 1972. Following his debut, he went on to appear in television series like ‘Peep Show’ (1975), ‘The David Steinberg Show’ (1976-1977), and ‘For the Record’ (1978). In 1979, he made his big-screen debut in the comedy film ‘Lost and Found’ directed by Melvin Frank. The film was a commercial failure. He was next seen in television series and shows like ‘The Associates’ (1979-1980), ‘The Love Boat’ (1980), ‘I'm a Big Girl Now’ (1980-1981), ‘Second City Television’ (1981-1984), and ‘Sunset Limousine’ (1983). In 1984, he became a part of the American late-night live television sketch comedy and variety show ‘Saturday Night Live’ created by Lorne Michaels. He remained a part of the show until 2021. He next appeared in television shows like ‘Tall Tales & Legends’ (1986), ‘The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley’ (1988), ‘The Tracey Ullman Show’ (1989-1990), ‘The Dave Thomas Comedy Show’ (1990), ‘Maniac Mansion’ (1992), ‘The Martin Short Show’ (1994), ‘Muppets Tonight’ (1996), ‘Merlin’ (1998), and ‘The Martin Short Show’ (1999-2000). In 2001, he created the television series ‘Primetime Glick.’ The show ran for 3 seasons and aired its final episode in 2003. He continued to star in television series and shows such as ‘Arrested Development’ (2005), ‘Jeopardy’ (2006), ‘Bob & Doug McKenzie's Two-Four Anniversary’ (2007), and ‘Damages’ (2010).Â
In 2010, he joined the voice cast of the animated television series ‘The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!’ directed by Tony Collingwood. He voiced ‘The Cat in the Hat’ and remained a part of the show until it went off-air in 2018. He continued to appear in television shows like ‘How I Met Your Mother’ (2011-2012), ‘Hollywood Game Night’ (2013, 2014), ‘Mulaney’ (2014-2015), ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ (2015), ‘Maya & Marty’ (2016), ‘BoJack Horseman’ (2017), and ‘The Simpsons’ (2017). In 2018, he voiced ‘Lemondrop / Ludzinka / Blitzen’ in the Canadian computer-animated Christmas film ‘Elliot the Littlest Reindeer’ directed by Jennifer Westcott. The film received mostly negative reviews from critics and holds a 29% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. He went on to star in films like ‘The Addams Family’ (2019), ‘The Willoughbys’ (2020), and ‘Back Home Again’ (2021). In 2021, he joined the main cast of the American mystery-comedy television series ‘Only Murders in the Building’ as ‘Oliver Putnam.’ The series was renewed for a third season in 2022. He will be next seen in the upcoming American comedy film ‘Mack & Rita’ directed by Katie Aselton.
