Saif Ali Khan made his debut in the 1993 Hindi-language action romantic drama film ‘Parampara,’ directed by Yash Chopra. The film was a critical and commercial failure. That same year, he also starred in the romantic drama film ‘Aashik Awara,’ directed by Umesh Mehra. While the film failed to impress the audience, Khan bagged the ‘Filmfare Award’ for his performance. In 1994, he played the role of ‘Deepak Kumar’ in the Indian action comedy film ‘Main Khiladi Tu Anari.’ The film received positive reviews upon release and was a box office success. He next acted in ‘Surakshaa’ (1995), ‘Ek Tha Raja’ (1996), ‘Tu Chor Main Sipahi’ (1996), ‘Hameshaa’ (1997), ‘Udaan’ (1997), ‘Keemat – They Are Back’ (1998), and ‘Humse Badhkar Kaun’ (1998).
In 1999, he starred as ‘Vinod Chaturvedi’ in the Hindi-language family drama film ‘Hum Saath-Saath Hain,’ directed by Sooraj R. Barjatya. The film received positive response from critics and was a major financial success, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of the year. Khan bagged his second ‘Filmfare Award’ for his performance as ‘Sameer Mulchandni’ in the 2001 Hindi-language coming-of-age romance film ‘Dil Chahta Hai,’ directed by Farhan Akhtar. The film opened to critical acclaim and did fairly well at the box office. In 2003, he starred as ‘Rohit Patel’ in the Hindi-language romantic comedy-drama film ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho,’ directed by Nikhil Advani. The film earned praise from critics who lauded the screenplay and the performance of the cast. Khan also earned the ‘Filmfare Award’ for his performance. The year 2004 saw the release of the Hindi-language romantic comedy film ‘Hum Tum’ where he appeared in the role of ‘Karan Kapoor.’ The film received mixed response from critics and did decent business at the box office. Khan once again received of the Filmfare Award for his performance in the film. He also received the ‘National Award’ for his role.
In 2006, Saif appeared in the crime drama film ‘Omkara,’ directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. The film was inspired by William Shakespeare's ‘Othello.’ The film impressed both the critics and the audience and was a major box office success. Khan’s portrayal of Ishwar "Langda" Tyagi earned him several awards and accolades, including the ‘Filmfare Award,’ ‘IIFA Award,’ and ‘Zee Cine Award.’ He next starred in films like ‘Eklavya: The Royal Guard’ (2007), ‘Race’ (2008), ‘Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic’ (2008), ‘Love Aaj Kal’ (2009), ‘Aarakshan’ (2011), ‘Agent Vinod’ (2012), ‘Race 2’ (2013), ‘Go Goa Gone’ (2013), ‘Humshakals’ (2014), ‘Phantom’ (2015), and ‘Rangoon’ (2017).
In 2018, he made his television debut in the Hindi-language crime thriller streaming television series ‘Sacred Games.’ The series aired its final episode in 2019.Â
Saif Ali Khan was last seen in the 2021 Hindi-language comedy film ‘Bunty Aur Babli 2,’ directed by Varun V. Sharma. The film received negative reviews from critics. He is all set to appear in the upcoming Indian Hindu mythological film ‘Adipurush.’ He will also be seen in ‘Go Goa Gone 2,’ the upcoming sequel to the 2013 Indian Hindi-language zombie apocalypse action black comedy film ‘Go Goa Gone.’
