Vidya Balan made her acting debut in the Indian sitcom ‘Hum Paanch’ in 1995. In 2003, she made her big-screen debut in the Indian Bengali film ‘Bhalo Theko’ directed by Goutam Halder. Balan played the role of Anandi’ in the film which earned several awards including the ‘Anandalok Award’ and ‘Zee Cine Award.’ She was next seen in the 2005 Indian musical romantic drama film ‘Parineeta’ directed by Pradeep Sarkar. The film was a critical and commercial success. ‘Parineeta’ also marked the Bollywood debut of Balan and earned her the ‘Filmfare Award.’ The following year, she starred as ‘Jhanvi Sahni’ in the Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama film ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’ directed by Rajkumar Hirani. The film saw critical acclaim and received 4 ‘National Film Awards.’ In 2007, she was seen in the Mani Ratnam-directed Indian Hindi-language drama film, ‘Guru.’ The film garnered praise from critics and did decent business at the box office. That same year, she also starred as ‘Avni Chaturvedi / Manjulika’ in the Indian Hindi-language psychological horror-comedy film ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ directed by Priyadarshan. The film was a major critical and commercial success. Balan also became a recipient of the ‘Anandalok Award’ for her role in the film.
She bagged the ‘Filmfare Award’ for her portrayal of ‘Dr. Vidya Arte’ in the 2009 Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama film ‘Paa’ directed by R. Balki. The film received positive to mixed reviews from critics and was a major financial success, grossing over ₹102 crores on a budget of ₹13 crores. The following year, Balan was seen playing the role of ‘Krishna Verma’ in the Indian black comedy film ‘Ishqiya’ directed by Abhishek Chaubey. While the film was warmly received by critics, it was a moderate success at the box office. Balan next appeared in films like ‘No One Killed Jessica’ (2011), ‘The Dirty Picture’ (2011), ‘Kahaani’ (2012), ‘Bombay Talkies’ (2013), ‘Ghanchakkar’ (2013), ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’ (2014), ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani’ (2015), ‘Te3n’ (2016), and ‘Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh’ (2016).
In 2017, she starred as ‘Begum Jaan’ in the Indian Hindi period drama film ‘Begum Jaan’ directed by Srijit Mukherji. The film was panned by critics though it managed to come out as an average box office success. That same year, she was seen playing the Sulochana "Sulu" Dubey in the Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama film ‘Tumhari Sulu’ directed by Suresh Triveni. The film saw positive reviews upon release and was a financial success. Balan also became a recipient of the ‘Filmfare Award’ for her performance in the film. She next appeared in films like ‘Amoli’ (2018), ‘NTR: Kathanayakudu’ (2019), ‘NTR: Mahanayakudu’ (2019), ‘Mission Mangal’ (2019), and ‘Shakuntala Devi’ (2020). Balan was last seen in the 2021 Indian Hindi-language thriller film ‘Sherni’ directed by Amit V. Masurkar. The film received a positive response from critics.
