Joel Schumacher is best known for directing the hit coming of age movie ‘St Elmo’s Fire’ (1985), the horror film ‘The Lost Boys’ (1987) and the science fiction horror movie ‘Flatliners’ (1990).
He also directed ‘The Client’ (1994) and ‘A Time to Kill’ (1996), adaptations of John Grisham’s novels. He replaced Tim Burton to direct ‘Batman Forever’ (1995) and ‘Batman & Robin’ (1997). The movies received negative reviews and failed at the box office due to which Schumacher turned to low budget movies like the crime mystery ‘8mm’ and comedy drama ‘Flawless’ in 1999.
He directed the hit Vietnam-era drama film ‘Tigerland’ (2000) and returned with the big budget movie ‘Bad Company’ in 2002. However, the movie failed at the box office.
Despite mixed reviews, his ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ (2004) did well commercially and was nominated for three Academy Awards as well as three Golden Globe Awards. Schumacher made cameo appearances as himself in the movie ‘Welcome to Hollywood’ (1998) and the television series ‘Nightcap’ (2017).
