F. Murray Abraham made his silver screen debut in the 1971 American comedy-mystery film ‘They Might Be Giants’ where he played the role of ‘Clyde.’ The film received a mixed response from critics. Following his debut, he went on to star in films like ‘Serpico’ (1973), ‘The Prisoner of Second Avenue’ (1975), ‘The Sunshine Boys’ (1975), ‘All the President's Men’ (1976), ‘The Ritz’ (1976), and ‘The Big Fix’ (1978). In 1983, he starred as ‘Omar Suárez’ in the American crime drama film ‘Scarface’ directed by Brian De Palma. Even though the film saw mostly negative reviews upon release, it attained a cult status in subsequent years. The following year, he portrayed ‘Antonio Salieri’ in the Miloš Forman-directed American period biographical drama film ‘Amadeus.’ The film opened to wide critical acclaim and came to be regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. Abraham also became a recipient of the ‘Academy Award’ and ‘Golden Globe Award’ for his portrayal of ‘Antonio Salieri’ in the film. In 1986, he played the role of ‘Bernardo Gui’ in the historical mystery film ‘The Name of the Rose’ directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. Even though the film received a lukewarm response from critics, it emerged as a commercial success and grossed over $77.2 million against a budget of $17.5 million.
He continued to appear in films like ‘The Third Solution’ (1988), ‘Slipstream’ (1989), ‘The Battle of the Three Kings’ (1990), ‘Mobsters’ (1991), ‘By the Sword’ (1991), ‘Through an Open Window’ (1992), ‘National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon’ (1993), ‘Surviving the Game’ (1994), ‘Mighty Aphrodite’ (1995), ‘Children of the Revolution’ (1996), ‘Mimic’ (1997), ‘Star Trek: Insurrection’ (1998), and ‘Finding Forrester’ (2000). In 2001, he starred as ‘Cyrus Kriticos’ in the supernatural horror film ‘Thirteen Ghosts’ directed by Steve Beck. The film was panned by critics and was a box office disappointment. The following year, he appeared in the American drama film ‘Joshua’ where he played the role of ‘Father Tordone.’ The film was based on Joseph F. Girzone’s novel of the same name. Abraham next starred in films like ‘Five Moons Square’ (2003), ‘Too Much Romance... It's Time for Stuffed Peppers’ (2004), ‘The Stone Merchant’ (2006), ‘Blood Monkey’ (2007), ‘Carnera: The Walking Mountain’ (2008), ‘Perestroika’ (2009), ‘September Eleven 1683’ (2012), ‘Dead Man Down’ (2013), The Grand Budapest Hotel’ (2014), and ‘The Day of the Siege: September Eleven 1683’ (2014).
In 2018, he was seen playing the role of ‘Cardinal Franklin’ in the American action-adventure film ‘Robin Hood’ directed by Otto Bathurst. The film was marred by negative reviews from critics and was a box office bomb. Abraham was last seen in the 2021 American horror film ‘Things Heard & Seen’ directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini. The film saw mostly negative reviews upon release.
