David Oyelowo was first seen in the television crime drama series ‘Maisie Raine’ in 1998. He made his big-screen debut in the 2001 Moody Shoaibi-directed sex comedy film ‘Dog Eat Dog.’ Oyelowo was next seen in films like ‘The Best Man’ (2005), ‘Who Do You Love?’ (2008), and ‘Rage’ (2009). In 2011, Oyelowo starred as ‘Steven Jacobs’ in the science fiction action thriller film ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes.’ The film earned praise from critics and was a massive commercial success. The following year, he was seen in the independent feature film ‘Middle of Nowhere.’ He played the character of ‘Brian’ in the film which earned him 3 award nominations, including an NAACP Image Award nomination and an ‘Independent Spirit Award’ nomination.
Oyelowo starred as ‘Louis Gaines’ in the 2013 historical drama film ‘The Butler’ which earned him the ‘NAACP Image Award’ for ‘Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture.’ The year 2014 proved to be quite favorable for Oyelowo. His first release in 2014 was the drama film ‘Nightingale,’ directed by Elliott Lester. His performance earned him a ‘Golden Globe Award’ and ‘Black Reel Award’ nomination. Oyelowo’s second release that year was the historical drama film ‘Selma’ where he portrayed ‘Martin Luther King Jr.’ The role proved to be the most successful one in his career and won him several awards and accolades, including the ‘Black Reel Award for Best Actor,’ and the ‘NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture.’
David Oyelowo went on to star in films like ‘Five Nights in Maine’ (2015), ‘Queen of Katwe’ (2016), ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ (2018), and ‘The Midnight Sky’ (2020). He was last seen in the 3D live-action/computer-animated adventure comedy film ‘Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway.’ Oyelowo is all set to appear in the upcoming drama film ‘Solitary’ directed by Nate Parker. He will also be seen in the upcoming mystery film titled ‘See How They Run.’
