A record holder Olympic athlete, Louis Zamperini joins WWII. His aircraft crash lands into ocean and survives an attack by a Japanese plane. After 47 days on the raft, he and his friend Phil are captured by Japanese Navy and sent to separate prison camps as POW. A ruthless prison guard Mutsuhiro Watanabe tortures and tries to break Louis, but he is far stronger.

Five unrelated people are shot dead in broad daylight and the accused is a former U.S. Army sniper, James Barr. However, he refuses to plead guilty and instead asks for Jack Reacher, an ex-military investigator. Reacher soon arrives and along with defense attorney Helen Rodin, sets out, to uncover the identity of the real perpetrators.
