Mandy Patinkin made his Broadway debut in 1977, and won a Tony Award for his solid portrayal of Che Guevara in Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Evita.' Thereafter, he appeared in Stephen Sondheim's musical, 'Sunday in the Park with George.' He left his mark on moviegoers with several E. L. Doctorow adaptations. In the 1981 film, 'Ragtime,' he played a filmmaker. It was followed by 'Daniel' in 1983.
He portrayed Avigdor in the 1983 film, 'Yentl,' and appeared as a Spanish swashbuckler in the 1985 'The Princess Bride.'
He is a skilled vocalist and instrumentalist, but these talents have remained almost untapped in films, except for his own 1990 film, '88 Keys in Dick Tracy.' In 1998, Patinkin recorded an album comprising of traditional, classical, and contemporary Yiddish music. In 1999, he starred in 'The Adventures of Elmo' and 'Grouchland.'
In 2003, Patinkin played an important role in the Showtime series, 'Dead Like Me,' and played the criminal profiler Jason Gideon in the CBS crime drama, 'Criminal Minds,' in 2005. He, however, left the show after two seasons.
