Johnny Lever made his film debut in the 1982 film 'Dard ka Rishta' where he played the role of ‘Joseph.’ The film was a box office hit. He next starred in films like ‘Main Balwaan’ (1986), ‘Jalwa’ (1987), ‘Hatya’ (1988), ‘Hero Hiralal’ (1988), ‘Jaadugar’ (1989), ‘Kala Bazar’ (1989), ‘Raeeszada’ (1990), ‘Narsimha’ (1991), and ‘Khiladi’ (1992). In 1993, he played the role of ‘Babulal’ in the Hindi language romantic thriller ‘Baazigar’ directed by Abbas-Mustan. The film was a major financial success and was one of the highest-grossing Indian films of 1993. Lever’s performance in the movie earned him a ‘Filmfare Award’ nomination.
In 1995, he was seen playing the role of ‘Linghaiyya Tripuri’ in the Hindi-language fantasy action film ‘Karan Arjun’ which earned him his second ‘Filmfare Award’ nomination. The film was applauded by critics and emerged as a blockbuster hit, grossing over ₹45 crores against a budget of ₹5.50 crores. The following year, he starred as ‘Balvant Singh’ in the Hindi-language romantic drama film ‘Raja Hindustani’ directed by Dharmesh Darshan. Lever bagged a ‘Screen Award’ for his performance in the film. He received a ‘Filmfare Award’ for his performance as ‘Ghafoor’ in the 1997 Hindi romantic comedy film ‘Deewana Mastana’ directed by David Dhawan. In the 2008 Hindi comedy ‘Dulhe Raja’ Lever played the role of ‘Baankey.’ The film was a moderate box office success.
In the new millennium, Johnny Lever went on to star in films like ‘Kunwara’ (2000), ‘Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani’ (2000), ‘Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega’ (2001), ‘Humraaz’ (2002), ‘Koi Mil Gaya’ (2003), ‘Deewane Huye Paagal’ (2005), ‘Phir Hera Pheri’ (2006), ‘De Dana Dan’ (2009), ‘Golmaal 3’ (2010), ‘Boss’ (2013), ‘Santa Banta Pvt Ltd’ (2016), and ‘Housefull 4’ (2019). In 2021, Lever made a cameo appearance in the 2021 Hindi-language romantic comedy film ‘Hungama 2.’ The film was a spiritual successor of the 2003 film ‘Hungama.’
