Hrithik Roshan was first seen in the 1980 Indian Hindi-language drama film ‘Aasha’ where he made an uncredited appearance in the song "Jaane Hum Sadak Ke Logon." He continued to make uncredited appearances in films like ‘Aap Ke Deewane’ (1980), ‘Aas Paas’ (1981), and ‘Aasra Pyaar Da’ (1983). In 2000, he made his official big-screen debut in the Rakesh Roshan-directed Indian Hindi-language romantic action film ‘Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai.’ The film opened to positive reviews from critics and did decent business at the box office, grossing over ₹80 crores on a budget of ₹10 crores. Roshan also became a recipient of 2 ‘Filmfare Awards’ for his performance in the film. The same year also saw the release of the Indian Hindi-language action thriller ‘Mission Kashmir’ where Roshan portrayed Altaaf Khan. In 2001, he starred as ‘Rohan Raichand’ in the Indian Hindi-language family-drama film ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…’ directed by Karan Johar. In 2008, he portrayed Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar in the Indian epic historical drama film ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. The film was lauded by critics and was a major box office success, grossing over ₹120 crores on a ₹33 crores budget. Roshan also bagged the ‘Filmfare Award’ and ‘Screen Award’ for his performance in the film.
