Salman Khan made his acting debut in a small role in ‘Biwi Ho To Aisi’ (1989). He soon achieved superstar status with his breakthrough role in Sooraj Barjatya's ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ (1989). He also earned his first ‘Filmfare’ nomination (Best Actor) for his performance in the film.Â
During the early 1990s, Salman Khan delivered commercial hits like ‘Baaghi: A Rebel for Love’ (1990), and ‘Saajan’(1991), which became the highest-grossing movie of that year. In the same year, Salman Khan gave three more box office hits with ‘Patthar Ke Phool,’ Sanam Bewafaa,’ and ‘Kurbaan.’ The year 1992 proved to be less favorable for Salman Khan as his all three movies, ‘Suryavanshi, ’Jaagruti’, and ‘Ek Ladka Ek Ladki’ tanked at the box office.Â
In 1994, Salman Khan starred in the Sooraj Barjatya-directed film ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!,' which established him as a star in the Hindi film industry. The same year, he shared the screen space with Aamir Khan in the comedy film 'Andaaz Apna Apna.' While the film was a moderate success, it has since achieved cult status.Â
In 1995, Salman featured alongside Shah Rukh Khan in Rakesh Roshan's ‘Karan Arjun,’ which was one of the highest-grossing films of 1995. Salman Khan also earned a Filmfare nomination for his role in the film.Â
In 1998, he appeared in the commercial hit 'Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya.' In the same year, he appeared for a brief role in Karan Johar directed ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.’ The year 1999 again proved lucky for Salman, as he delivered three successful films: 'Biwi No. 1,' 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' and 'Hum Saath-Saath Hain.’
In 2003, Salman earned critical acclaim for his performance as ‘Radhe’ in the romantic film 'Tere Naam.' He also made a brief appearance in the Amitabh Bachchan-starrer 'Baghban' the same year. Thereafter, Salman featured in successful comedies such as ‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’ (2004) and ‘No Entry’ (2005). After ‘No Entry’, Salman struggled to give a successful hit. His movies ‘Kyonki’ (2005), ‘Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar’ (2006), ‘Jaan-E-Mann’ (2006), ‘Babul’ (2006), and ‘Salaam-E-Ishq’ (2007) came out as commercial failures.Â
In 2007, Salman made a strong return with ‘Partner’ (2007). The following year, i.e in 2008, he made his television debut with the game show '10 Ka Dum.' He hosted 2 seasons of the show. Â
Salman’s career saw a downslide post 'Partner' (2007), but he made a solid come back with the action thriller 'Wanted' (2009), followed by 'Dabangg' (2010). Around the same time, Salman began hosting the highly successful television show 'Bigg Boss.' The 2011 family comedy film 'Chillar Party,' produced by Salman's production house, won the National Film Award for Best Children's Film. The same year, he starred in 2 successful hits; 'Ready' and ‘Bodyguard.’Â
The year 2012 marked Salman’s first collaboration with ‘Yash Raj Films’ when he starred in the blockbuster hit ‘Ek Tha Tiger.’
In 2015, Salman Khan starred in the Kabir Khan-directed film ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan.’ The movie became a massive hit and went on to become one of the highest-grossing Indian films. The movie’s climax scene was shot at Sonmarg, near Thajiwas glacier, in Kashmir Valley. His second release that year, Sooraj Barjatya's 'Prem Ratan Dhan Payo,’ could not weave the same old magic but managed to earn big numbers at the box office  Â
The year 2016 saw the release of the sports drama ‘Sultan.’ The movie broke several box office records and became Salman’s second movie to join the club of highest-grossing Indian films. In 2017, he appeared in the war drama film ‘Tubelight’ which ended up becoming a moderate success. The same year, Salman starred in ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ which became an all-time blockbuster.    Â
In 2018, Salman Khan saw his first release with ‘Race 3.’ The movie received negative reviews and came to be considered as one of the worst films ever made.Â
Salman's 2019 film 'Bharat' opened to mixed reviews from critics but was a big commercial success. His much-awaited 'Radhe' got delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was finally released on May 13, 2021, as a premium video on demand in India. The film was, however, panned by critics and audiences alike.
The Mahesh Manjrekar-directed ‘Antim: The Final Truth,' starring Salman Khan and Ayush Sharma, received average reviews and did medicore business at the box office. The movie released on November 26, 2021.Â
