Bernard Whalen ‘Bert’ Convy was initially a part of ‘The Billy Barnes Revue’ and then appeared on various Broadway productions. His first screen-appearance was on the 1957 TV series ‘Those Whiting Girls’ and ‘Men of Annapolis,’ while his first film was the comedy horror ‘A Bucket of Blood’ (1959).
After single-episode appearances on the TV series ‘One Step Beyond,’ ‘Perry Mason,’ ‘Harrigan & Son,’ ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents,’ Convy played various roles in the series ’77 Sunset Strip.’ He appeared in the Western ‘Gunman’s Walk’ (1960), the drama films ‘Susan Slade’ (1961), ‘Act One’ (1963), the romantic comedy ‘Give her the Moon’ (1970), and TV series ‘The Untouchables,’ ‘The Defenders,’ ‘East Side/West Side,’ ‘Preview Tonight,’ ‘Hawk,’ ‘Love of Life’ and others.
Convy was a panelist on ‘To Tell the Truth’ (1967-1968, 1971-1973), and Team Captain on ‘The Match Game’ (1968-1969, 1973-1979), followed by ‘What’s My Line?’ (1968-1970). He was a celebrity contestant on ‘All-Star Family Feud Special’ (1984) and on the game show ‘Password’ (1972-1973), ‘Password Plus’ (1979-1982), and later hosted ‘Super Password’ (1984-1989).
Convy hosted the game show ‘Tattletales’ (1974-1978, 1982-1984), earning the ‘Emmy Award for Outstanding Game-Show Host’ (1977). Later, he produced and hosted (first 2 seasons) the game show ‘Win, Lose or Draw’ (1987-1990) and ‘3rd Degree’ (1989). He also hosted the revival of ‘The Match Game’ in 1990.
Convey appeared on several other TV series, including ‘Bewitched’ (1970), ‘The Partridge Family’ (1971-1973), ‘Love, American Style’ (1971-1973), ‘Mission: Impossible’ (1972), and ‘The Snoop Sisters’ (1973-1974), amongst many others. He played various roles in ‘Hawaii Five-O’ (1973-1975), ‘It’s Not Easy’ (1983), ‘Fantasy Island’ (1978-1984), ‘Murder, She Wrote’ (1984) and ‘The Love Boat’ (1978-1987).
He also starred in several TV movies, such as ‘Death Takes a Holiday’ (1972), ‘Keep the Faith’ (1972), ‘Lady Luck’ (1973), ‘The Girl on the Late, Late Show’ (1974), ‘The Love Boat-II’ (1977), ‘SST: Death Flight’ (1977), ‘Hanging by a Thread’ (1979).
Convy also frequently appeared on ‘The Merv Griffin Show’ (1965-1975), ‘The Mike Douglas Show’ (1965-1977), and ‘The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson’ (1974-1987).
Convey also starred in the sports comedy film ‘Semi-Tough’ (1977), the supernatural-horror film ‘Jennifer’ (1978), the comedy film ‘Racquet’ (1979), the superhero comedy film ‘Hero at Large’ (1980), the action comedy ‘The Cannonball Run’ (1981), TV movies ‘Ebony, Ivory, Jade’ (1979), the Christmas fantasy ‘The Man in the Santa Claus Suit’ (1979), the romantic comedy ‘Love Thy Neighbor’ (1984) and the TV miniseries ‘Jacqueline Susan’s Valley of the Dolls’ (1981). In 1986, Convy directed the military comedy film ‘Weekend Warriors.’
