He next appeared in the 1997 American thriller film ‘The Game’ directed by David Fincher. Despite opening to positive reviews, the film was a moderate financial success. In 1999, he made his directorial debut in the American fantasy comedy film ‘Being John Malkovich.’ The film opened to wide critical acclaim and was a box office success. He next produced the 2001 comedy-drama film ‘Human Nature’ directed by Michel Gondry. The film received a mixed response from critics. In 2002, he produced the American reality slapstick comedy film ‘Jackass: The Movie.’ The film opened to mixed reviews and was a massive box office success, grossing over $79.5 million on a budget of $5 million. Jonze was also one of the writers of the film. That same year, he also directed the American meta comedy-drama film ‘Adaptation’ which was a critical and commercial success.
He went on to produce films like ‘Jackass Number Two’ (2006), ‘Jackass 2.5’ (2007), and ‘Synecdoche, New York’ (2008). Jonze returned to the director’s chair for the 2009 fantasy adventure drama film ‘Where the Wild Things Are.’ The film met with universal acclaim with many critics calling it one of the best films of the year. He next produced ‘Jackass 3D’ (2010), ‘Jackass 3.5’ (2011), ‘Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa’ (2013), and ‘Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa.5.’ In 2022, he wrote and produced ‘Jackass Forever,’ the fifth overall installment of the ‘Jackass’ film series.
