Armin Mueller-Stahl made his screen debut in the 1956 Heimliche Ehen-directed East German comedy film ‘Heimliche Ehen’ where he played the role of ‘Norbert.’ Following his debut, he went on to appear in films like ‘Die Flucht aus der Hölle’ (1960), ‘Star-Crossed Lovers’ (1962), ‘Naked among Wolves’ (1963), and ‘Preludio 11’ (1964). In 1965, he joined the cast of the East German television series ‘Wolf Among Wolves’ where he portrayed ‘Wolfgang Pagel.’ The show was based on Hans Fallada’s 1938 novel of the same name. It was also the first East German television series to be aired in West Germany. He next starred in films like ‘Ein Lord am Alexanderplatz’ (1967), ‘Ways across the Country’ (1968), ‘Tödlicher Irrtum’ (1970), ‘Her Third’ (1972), ‘Die Hosen des Ritters von Bredow’ (1973), and ‘Kit & Co’ (1974). In 1974, he starred as ‘Roman Schtamm’ in the war drama film ‘Jacob the Liar’ directed by Frank Beyer. The film was widely praised by critics and went on to become the only East German film to earn an Academy Award nomination. He continued to star in films such as ‘Die Flucht’ (1977), ‘Lola’ (1981), ‘Veronika Voss’ (1982), ‘Glut’ (1983), ‘A Love in Germany’ (1983), ‘Tausend Augen’ (1984), ‘Colonel Redl’ (1985), ‘The Assault of the Present on the Rest of Time’ (1985), ‘Momo’ (1986), ‘Lethal Obsession’ (1987), ‘Killing Blue’ (1988), ‘Spider's Web’ (1989), and ‘Music Box’ (1989).
He portrayed ‘Sam Krichinsky’ in the 1990 American drama film ‘Avalon’ directed by Barry Levinson. The film opened to wide critical acclaim and received 4 Academy Award nominations. Mueller-Stahl was next seen in films like ‘Night on Earth’ (1991), ‘Kafka’ (1991), ‘Utz’ (1992), ‘The Power of One’ (1992), ‘Red Hot’ (1993), ‘The House of the Spirits’ (1993), ‘Taxandria’ (1994), ‘Holy Matrimony’ (1994), ‘A Pyromaniac's Love Story’ (1995), ‘Shine’ (1996), ‘The Ogre’ (1996), and ‘In the Presence of Mine Enemies’ (1997). In 1997, he played the role of ‘Anson Baer’ in the David Fincher-directed American thriller film ‘The Game.’ The film was warmly received by the critics and was an average box office success, grossing over $109.4 million on a budget of $70 million. That same year, he also appeared in the American political action thriller film ‘The Peacemaker’ directed by Mimi Leder. Even though the film opened to a mixed critical response, it enjoyed a decent run at the box office and grossed over $110.4 million on a budget of $50 million.
Mueller-Stahl went on to appear in films like ‘The X-Files’ (1998), ‘The Thirteenth Floor’ (1999), ‘Jakob the Liar’ (1999), ‘Mission to Mars’ (2000), ‘The Long Run’ (2001), ‘The Story of an African Farm’ (2004), ‘Local Color’ (2006), ‘Eastern Promises’ (2007), ‘Buddenbrooks’ (2008), ‘The International’ (2009), ‘Angels & Demons’ (2009), and ‘Attack on Leningrad’ (2009). He was last seen in the 2015 American drama film ‘Knight of Cups’ directed by Terrence Malick. The film received a mixed response from critics.
