Sandra Birgitte Toksvig started her career with an all-woman comedy show (first of its kind) at the Cambridge University drama-club, ‘Footlights.’ She made her TV debut as writer-star of the children’s TV-series ‘Number 73’ (1982-1986).
Toksvig further appeared on various children’s TV-series and sketch comedy-series, including ‘The Saturday Starship’ (1984-1985), ‘Gilbert’s Fridge’ (1986-1988). She was writer-actor in the comedy-series ‘The Big One’ (1992), and also wrote for several series, including ‘Toksvig’ (1988), ‘Motormouth’ (1991-1992), TV-movie ‘Doors Open’ (2012), and ‘Playhouse Presents’ (2012).
Toksvig presented the TV program ‘Island Race’ and hosted the TV series ‘The Talking Show’ (1993). During 1999-2002, she frequently presented the documentary TV series ‘Time Team.’ She was a panelist on various TV series, including ‘Don’t Quote Me’ (1990), ‘Whose Line is it Anyway?’ (1989-1991), ‘That’s Show-business’ (1992), ‘Have I Got News for You?’ (1990-1992), and ‘Call My Bluff’ (1996-2002).
As a show-host, Toksvig conducted game shows such as ‘The Talking Show’ (1993), ‘What the Dickens?’ (2008-2009), and ‘Fifteen-to-One’ (2014-2019). She was presenter of documentary-series ‘Police Dog Academy’ (2000) and ‘The One Show’ (2008-2021); the game-show ‘1001 Things You Should Know’ (2012-2013), and the travel-series ‘Extraordinary Escapes with Sandi Toksvig’ (2021).
After being a frequent guest, Toksvig became host of game-show ‘QI,’ in 2016. She thus became the first female to anchor a popular British comedy panel-show (2016-2020). With comedian Noel Fielding, she was a co-presenter of the baking competition show ‘The Great British Bake Off’ (2017-2020).
Toksvig appeared either as herself or in guest roles in various TV series, including ‘Kingdom’ (2009), TV Christmas Special ‘Call the Midwife’ (2013), ‘Loose Women’ (2000-2019), ‘Lorraine’ (2016-2020), and more.
