Former death-row prison officer Paul Edgecomb recounts how the lives of the guards were affected after they received as inmate an enormous black man, John Coffey, convicted of raping and murdering two white girls. They began to question the conviction as they realize that Coffey was a kind-hearted person childishly afraid of darkness and possessed supernatural gifts.
