Dave Lizewski, an ordinary school student and comic book lover, decides to change his life by becoming masked vigilante, Kick-Ass, despite having no superpower or training. He soon earns the attention of a mafia boss after a video of him beating thugs goes viral online, forcing him to join forces with real vigilantes, Big Daddy and Hit-Girl.

After Hit Girl is busted for sneakily fighting crime and is forced into a normal life, Kick-Ass joins a group of self-made superheroes led by reformed mafia-boss Colonel Stars and Stripes. Meanwhile, his nemesis Red Mist swears vengeance on him and gathers a team of supervillains from whom only Hit Girl can save the amateur vigilantes.
