Jackie Shroff made his acting debut in the 1982 Hindi-language action film ‘Swami Dada,' directed by Dev Anand. The following year, he starred as ‘Jackie Dada / Jai Kishan’ in the romantic action film ‘Hero.’ The film was praised by critics and was \ a blockbuster hit at the box office. He went on to appear in successful hits such as 'Andar Baahar' (1984), 'Jaanoo' (1985), and 'Yudh' (1985). In 1986, he appeared in the Subhash Ghai-directed action film ‘Karma.’ The film received praise from critics and was the highest-grossing Indian film of 1986.Â
In 1989, Shroff reunited with Subhash Ghai in the Hindi-language masala film ‘Ram Lakhan.’ The film opened to rave reviews from critics with many calling it Ghai’s finest work. ‘Ram Lakhan’ was also a massive commercial success and became the second highest-grossing Bollywood film of 1989. He next appeared in films like 'Tridev' (1989), 'Izzat' (1991), '100 Days' (1991), 'Dil Hi To Hai' (1993), 'King Uncle' (1993), 'Khalnayak' (1993), and 'Aaina' (1993).
Shroff starred as ‘Raj Kamal’ in the 1995 Ram Gopal Varma-directed Indian Hindi-language romantic comedy ‘Rangeela’ for which he bagged the ‘Filmfare Award’ for ‘Best Supporting Actor.’ The film was a critical and commercial success and is believed to be the inspiration behind the 2004 American romantic comedy film ‘Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!’Â
In 2000, Jackie appeared in the action thriller ‘Mission Kashmir,’ which was directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The film received universal acclaim upon release and went on to become a massive box office hit. In 2002, he portrayed ‘Chunnilal’ in the Hindi-language epic romantic drama film ‘Devdas’ directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Thereafter, he starred in films like ‘Ek Aur Ek Gyarah’ (2003), ‘Aan: Men at Work’ (2004), ‘Kyon Ki’ (2005), ‘Eklavya: The Royal Guard’ (2006), ‘Mukhbiir’ (2008), and ‘Malik Ek’ (2009).
He made his Tamil debut in the 2010 neo-noir action thriller ‘Aaranya Kaandam’ directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja. He played the role of ‘Singaperumal/Ayya’ for which he won the ‘Ananda Vikatan Cinema Award’ for ‘Best Villain.’ Some of his other Tamil films include ‘Kochadaiyaan’ (2014), ‘Mupparimanam’ (2017), and ‘Saaho’ (2019).Â
