Frank Langella made his acting debut at an early age, in 1963, in an off-Broadway production titled āThe Immoralist.ā He made his television debut as āMichael Romaniā in the 1965 TV series āThe Trials of O'Brien.ā After making brief appearances in āNBC Experiment in Televisionā (1967) and āNET Playhouseā (1967), he made his film debut in the Frank Perry-directed comedy-drama āDiary of a Mad Housewife.ā The film was based on a novel written by āSue Kaufman.ā Right after his debut, he was seen in films like āThe Deadly Trapā (1971), āThe Wrath of Godā (1972), and āThe Mark of Zorroā (1974).Ā
In 1979, he starred as āCount Draculaā in the British-American horror film āDraculaā directed by John Badham. The film received a positive response from critics and was a box office success. After appearing in films like āThose Lips, Those Eyesā (1980), āSphinxā (1981), and āThe Men's Clubā (1981), Langella joined the cast of the 1987 American superhero film āMasters of the Universeā as āSkeletor.ā The film received negative reviews from the critics and failed to achieve success at the box office. However, it later developed a cult following. He then appeared in films like āTrue Identityā (1991), āBody of Evidenceā (1993), āJuniorā (1994), āEddieā (1996), āSmall Soldiersā (1998), āStardomā (2000), āHouse of Dā (2004), and āGood Night, and Good Luckā (2005).
In the 2005 American superhero film āSuperman Returns,ā Langella played the role of āPerry White.ā The film opened to a positive reception and became a commercial success. In 2008, he starred in the historical drama film āFrost/Nixonā directed by Ron Howard. He portrayed āRichard Nixon,ā the 37th president of the United States, in the film which earned him several award nominations, including the āAcademy Awardā and āGolden Globe Awardā nominations.Ā
In 2012, he played the role of āFrank Weldā in the Jake Schreier-directed science fiction comedy-drama film āRobot & Frank.ā The film earned critical acclaim upon release with critics praising the writing and acting performances. Langella next appeared in āParts per Billionā (2013), āNoahā (2014), āGrace of Monacoā (2014), āThe Driftless Areaā (2015), and āYouth in Oregonā (2016).
He was last seen in the 2020 American historical legal drama film āThe Trial of the Chicago 7ā directed by Aaron Sorkin. The film was widely praised by the critics and received 5 āGolden Globe Awardā nominations.
