Joe Pantoliano made his acting debut in the role of an ‘undercover cop’ in the 1974 screwball-comedy film ‘For Pete's Sake,’ directed by Peter Yates. However, his role wasn’t credited in the film. He made his television debut in the 1977 television film ‘McNamara's Band.’ The following year, he joined the cast of the American sitcom ‘Free Country’ where he played the role of ‘Louis Peschi.’ The show aired 5 episodes. In 1980, he starred as ‘Gino Pilato’ in the American musical drama film ‘The Idolmaker,’ directed by Taylor Hackford. The film marked the official film debut of Pantoliano. He returned to television and appeared in series like ‘Hart to Hart’ (1981-1984), ‘M*A*S*H’ (1981), ‘Chicago Story’ (1982), and ‘Hardcastle and McCormick’ (1983).
In 1983, he acted in the teen sex comedy film ‘Risky Business,’ directed by Paul Brickman. The film opened to positive reviews from critics with many calling it one of the best films of 1983. ‘Risky Business’ was also a major commercial success, grossing over $63.5 million against a budget of $6.2 million. Pantoliano next acted in ‘Eddie and the Cruisers’ (1983), ‘The Mean Season’ (1985), ‘The Goonies’ (1985), and ‘Running Scared’ (1986). In 1987, he portrayed American musician ‘Bob Keane’ in the biographical film ‘La Bamba,’ directed by Luis Valdez. The film opened to critical acclaim with critics praising its screenplay and writing. In 2017, ‘La Bamba’ was added to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
He then acted in ‘The in Crowd’ (1988), ‘Downtown’ (1990), ‘Backstreet Dreams’ (1990), ‘Zandalee’ (1991), ‘The Fugitive’ (1993), ‘Me and the Kid’ (1993), ‘Baby's Day Out’ (1994), ‘Bad Boys’ (1995), ‘Top of the World’ (1997), and ‘Taxman’ (1998). In 1991, Pantoliano starred as ‘Cypher’ in the science fiction action film ‘The Matrix.’ The film opened to positive reviews and was a massive box office success, grossing over $466.6 million on a budget of $63 million.Â
Pantoliano joined the cast of the crime drama television series ‘The Sopranos’ in 2001. He played the role of ‘Ralph Cifaretto’ in the series which earned him a ‘Primetime Emmy Award’ for ‘Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.’ Pantoliano left the show in 2004 and went on to star in television series like ‘Dr. Vegas’ (2004), ‘The Simpsons’ (2006), ‘How to Make it in America’ (2011), ‘Sense8’ (2015-2017), ‘Tacoma FD’ (2020), and ‘MacGyver’ (2020). Pantoliano was last seen in the 2021 television film ‘The Santa Stakeout’ where he played the role of ‘Francis Miller.’
