Diego Luna first appeared as ‘Luis’ in the Mexican television drama series ‘El abuelo y yo’ in 1992. In 1995, he starred as ‘Quique Domínguez’ in the Mexican telenovela 'El premio mayor.' Diego made his film debut with the 1999 Mexican drama film ‘A Sweet Scent of Death’ directed by Gabriel Retes. In 2000, he starred as ‘Carlos’ in the American biographical drama film ‘Before Night Falls.’ While the film opened to a positive reception, it failed to perform at the box office.
Luna was next seen in the 2001 Mexican road film ‘Y tu mamá también’ directed by Alfonso Cuarón. He played the role of ‘Tenoch Iturbide’ which earned him a ‘Marcello Mastroianni Award’ and ‘MTV Movie Award.’ He went on to star in films like ‘Frida’ (2002), ‘Vampires: Los Muertos’ (2002), ‘Nicotina’ (2002) for which he won his second ‘MTV Movie Award,’ ‘Soldados de Salamina’ (2003), and ‘Open Range’ (2003). The year 2004 saw the release of the Steven Spielberg-directed American comedy-drama film ‘The Terminal’ where Luna was seen playing the role of ‘Enrique Cruz.’ The film received mostly positive reviews from critics and was a box office success.
After starring in films like ‘Criminal’ (2004), ‘Only God Knows’ (2006), ‘Rudo y Cursi’ (2008), and ‘Milk’ (2008), Luna made his directorial debut with the 2010 Mexican comedy film ‘Abel.’ He returned to the director’s chair for the 2014 Mexican-American biographical film ‘Cesar Chavez.’ The film premiered at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival and received mixed reviews from critics. In 2018, he joined the lead cast of the American crime drama series ‘Narcos: Mexico.’ He played the role of ‘Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo’ for which he won the ‘Platino Award’ for ‘Best Actor in a Miniseries or TV series.’
Diego Luna was last seen in a voice role in the 2021 American computer-animated science fantasy film ‘Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans.’ He is all set to appear in the upcoming American 3D computer-animated superhero comedy film ‘DC League of Super-Pets.’
