Audra Marie Lindley began her film career as a stand-in and played uncredited minor parts in several early 1940s movies, including ‘Manpower,’ ‘One Foot in Heaven,’ ‘Dangerously They Live,’ and ‘The Male Animal.’ She next turned to theater and appeared in several Broadway productions.
After taking a break to raise her family, Lindley began appearing on TV in series such as ‘Lux Video Theater’ (1950-1951), ‘The Web’ (1951-1954), ‘Ponds Theater’ (1955), ‘Modern Romances’ (1955-1956), ‘Robert Montgomery Presents’ (1951-1956), ‘Kraft Theater’ (1953-1958), ‘From These Roots’ (1958-1961), ‘Naked City’ (161-1962) amongst others.
Lindley played ‘Sue Knowles’ in the long-running soap-opera ‘Search for Tomorrow’ (1962), and had a regular role as ‘Aunt Liz Matthews’ in the soap opera ‘Another World’ (1964-1969). Thereafter, she starred in the Milos Forman directed comedy film ‘Taking Off’ (1971) and the romantic black comedy ‘The Heartbreak Kid’ (1972).
Lindley’s regular role as ‘Amy Fitzgerald’ in the soap-opera ‘Bridget Loves Bernie’ (1972-1973) earned her a ‘Golden Globe’ nomination. She then played recurring roles in several TV series, including ‘Fay’ (1975-1976) and ‘Doc’ (1976); the miniseries ‘Pearle’ (1978) and ‘The Love Boat’ (1977-1981). She also made guest-appearances in the TV-series ‘Maude,’ ‘Barnaby Jones,’ ‘Friends’ and many more. Â
Lindley also starred in several TV-films such as ‘The Canterville Ghost’ 91974), ‘Getting Married’ (1978), ‘The Silent Lovers’ (1980), ‘Revenge of the Stepford Wives’ (1980), ‘Skyward Christmas’ (1981), ‘The Day the Bubble Burst’ (1982) and more.
Lindley is remembered for her role as landlady ‘Helen Roper’ in the popular sitcom ‘Three’s Company’ (1977-1984), which fetched her the second ‘Golden Globe’ nomination. She reprised the role in its spin-off series ‘The Ropers’ (1979-1980).
Lindley played supporting roles in various feature films, including ‘When Are You Coming Back, Red Ryder?’ (1979), comedy-drama ‘Cannery Row’ (1982), romantic comedy ‘Best Friends’ (1982) with Burt Reynolds and Goldie Hawn, ‘Desert Hearts’ (1985) about lesbian relationship, the comedy ‘Troop Beverly Hills’ (1989) and the thriller ‘Spellbinder’ (1988) amongst others.
Lindley also starred in single episodes of the horror-anthology series ‘Tales from the Crypt’ (1989) and ‘The Hidden Room’ (1991). Her later TV films were ‘Dangerous Affection’ (1987), ‘Perry Mason: The Case of the Lady in the Lake’ (1988), ‘Absolute Strangers’ (1991) and ‘Just My Imagination’ (1992). Her last few feature-films included the comedy drama ‘The New Age’ (1994), the sports action-thriller ‘Sudden Death’ (1995), ‘Shoot the Moon’ (1996) and the monster-horror ‘The Relic’ (1997). Her last screen appearance was in a recurring-role as Cybil Shepherd’s mother in the sitcom ‘Cybil’ (1996-1998).
