Sebastian Koch made his screen debut in the 1991 René Allio-directed drama film ‘Transit’ where he portrayed ‘Gerhardt.’ That same year, he portrayed ‘young Gerhard Selb’ in the television film ‘Der Tod kam als Freund.’ He continued to star in television series and films such as ‘Cosimas Lexikon’ (1992), ‘Hart to Hart: Two Harts in 3/4 Time’ (1995), ‘Les Alsaciens ou les Deux Mathilde’ (1996), ‘Todesspiel’ (1997), ‘Ein Lied von Liebe und Tod’ (1999), ‘Das Tal der Schatten’ (1999), ‘The Tunnel’ (2001), ‘Dance with the Devil’ (2001), and ‘Dance with the Devil’ (2001). In 2002, he portrayed ‘Rudolf Höss’ in the Costa-Gavras-directed historical war drama film ‘Amen.’ The film saw its premiere at the 52nd Berlin International Film Festival and received several César Award nominations. He next appeared in films and series like ‘Napoleon’ (2002), ‘Das fliegende Klassenzimmer’ (2003), ‘Princesse Marie’ (2004), ‘Stauffenberg’ (2004), ‘Speer und Er’ (2005), and ‘The Shell Seekers’ (2006). He played the role of ‘Georg Dreyman’ in the 2006 German drama film ‘The Lives of Others’ directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. The film saw universal acclaim upon release and was a phenomenal commercial success, grossing over $77.3 million on a budget of $2 million. The same year also saw the release of the Paul Verhoeven-directed war drama thriller film ‘Black Book’ where Koch portrayed ‘Ludwig Müntze.’ The film was a critical and commercial success and came to be known as one of the best Dutch films ever.
Koch was next seen in films like ‘In jeder Sekunde’ (2008), ‘Effi Briest’ (2009), ‘Sea Wolf’ (2009), ‘Unknown’ (2011), ‘Albatross’ (2011), ‘God Loves Caviar’ (2012), and ‘Suspension of Disbelief’ (2012). In 2013, he starred as ‘Yuri Komarov’ in ‘A Good Day to Die Hard,’ the fifth and final film in the Die Hard series. Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, the film managed to gross over $304.7 million on a budget of $92 million. He continued to star in films and television series like ‘Homeland’ (2015–2016), ‘The Danish Girl’ (2015), ‘Fog in August’ (2016), ‘Billionaire Ransom’ (2016), ‘Bel Canto’ (2018), ‘Never Look Away’ (2018), ‘The Name of the Rose’ (2019), and ‘The Defeated’ (2021). Koch was last seen in the 2022 crime drama series ‘Your Honor.’
