French actor and writer-director Mathieu Amalric made his screen debut in the drama film ‘Favorites of the Moon’ (1984), then wrote and directed short films, including ‘Marre de Café’ (1985), ‘Sans rires’ (1990), and ‘8bis’ (1993). He also worked as an assistant director for several French films.
The 1996 film ‘Le Journal du seducteur’ fetched him award nominations, while the drama film ‘My Sex Life….or How I Got into an Argument’ brought him the ‘Cesar Award for Most Promising Actor.’ In 1997, he directed his first feature film, ‘Mange ta soupe,’ followed by ‘Le stade de Wimbledon’ (2001), the television film ‘Lo chose publique’ (2003) and many other short films.

Amalric’s performance in the drama film ‘Kings & Queen’ (2004) earned him ‘Cesar’ and ‘Lumieres’ award for best actor. He also received nominations for portrayal of ‘Louis’ in Steven Spielberg’s historical drama film ‘Munich’ (2005). His other films of that period include the drama film ‘I Saw Ben Barka Get Killed’ (2005), ‘La Moustache’ (2005), the historical drama ‘Marie Antoinette’ (2006), the musical romantic drama ‘When I was a Singer’ (2006), ‘Le Grand Appartement’ (2006) and others.
Amalric earned awards for his starring role in the French film ‘Heartbeat Detector’ (2007). His much-acclaimed portrayal of the French journalist-author 'Jean-Dominique Bauby’ in the biographical drama film ‘The Diving Bell & the Butterfly’ (2007) won him the ‘Cesar’ and ‘Lumieres’ award, amongst other accolades. Next, he played villain ‘Dominic Greene’ in the James Bond film ‘Quantum of Solace’ (2008). He also starred in ‘Actrices’ (2007), ‘Michou d’Auber’ (2007), the 2008 comedy dramas ‘A Christmas Tale,’ ‘On War,’ and the 2009-released ‘Happy End’ and ‘Wild Grass,’ and received nominations for ‘Mesrine: Public Enemy Number 1’ (2008).
Amalric wrote, directed and starred in the 2010 comedy drama film ‘On Tour’ that brought several nominations and the 'Best Director' award at 'the Cannes Film Festival.' He received further accolades for the French erotic-thriller ‘The Blue Room’ (2014), and the ‘Cesar Award’ nomination for 'Best Actor' for Roman Polanski’s erotic-drama ‘Venus in Fur’ (2013).
Amalric also starred in the drama-thriller ‘Cosmopolis’ (2012) and ‘Love is the Perfect Crime’ (2013), the epic war film ‘Lines of Wellington’ (2012), ‘Jimmy P. Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian’ (2013), the comedy films ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ (2014), ‘If You Don’t, I Will’ (2014), and ‘Mother Schmuckers’ (2021); the drama films ‘My Golden Days’ (2015), ‘Ismael’s Ghost’ (2017), and ‘Sound of Metal’ (2019); and the sci-fi-thriller ‘Oxygen’ (2021), amongst many more. His latest movie as writer-director-star was the drama ‘Barbara’ (2017).
