Swedish-French actor Max Von Sydow essayed over 160 characters in several languages during his 7 decades of illustrious career. His debut movie was the Swedish drama-film ‘Only a Mother’ (1949). Subsequently, he worked more on stage where he won critical acclaim.
Later, Sydow collaborated with Ingmar Bergman for 11 movies. Their first film, ‘The Seventh Seal,’ wherein Sydow played Knight Antonius Block, won him accolades. His other films with Bergman include ‘The Magician’ (1958), ‘The Virgin Spring’ (1960), and ‘Through a Glass Darkly’ (1961).
In his international film debut, Sydow played ‘Jesus’ in ‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’ (1965). He was often cast in negative roles in such films as ‘The Kremlin Letter’ (1970), ‘Three Days of the Condor’ (1975), ‘Flash Gordon’ (1980), ‘Never Say Never Again’ (1983). In 1988, he directed Swedish film ‘Katinka.’
Sydow received ‘Golden Globe’ nomination for his titular role in ‘The Exorcist’ (1973) and Academy Award nominations for ‘Pelle the Conqueror’ (1987) and ‘Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close’ (2011).
His other remarkable roles include ‘Minority Report’ (2002), ‘Rush Hour-3’ (2007), ‘Shutter Island’ (2010), ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ (2015), and the series ‘Game of Thrones’ (2016).
