Laverne Cox made her debut in the 2004 drama film ‘The Kings of Brooklyn’ directed by Lance Lane. In 2008, she made her first television appearance in the Episode: "Closet" of the American crime drama television series ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.’ That same year, she also became a part of the reality show ‘I Want to Work for Diddy.’ She was eliminated in the 6th episode of the show. In 2010, she joined the American reality television series ‘TRANSform Me’ created by Abby Terkuhle, Kristine Patnugot, and Robert Jason. The show went off-air after one season. She starred as ‘Chantelle’ in the 2011 American dance film ‘Musical Chairs’ directed by Susan Seidelman. The film opened to favorable reviews and scored an approval rating of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. In 2013, she joined the cast of the American comedy-drama streaming television series ‘Orange Is the New Black’ created by Jenji Kohan. She played the role of ‘Sophia Burset’ in the show which earned her several award nominations including 2 ‘Primetime Emmy Award’ nominations. ‘Orange Is the New Black’ ran for 7 seasons and aired its final episode in July 2019.
The year 2015 saw the release of the American comedy-drama film ‘Grandma’ where Cox was seen playing the role of ‘Deathy.’ The film was praised by critics and was given a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was also ranked amongst the top ten independent films of 2015 by the National Board of Review. She next appeared in television series and shows such as ‘The Mindy Project’ (2015-2017), ‘Lip Sync Battle’ (2016-2019), ‘America's Got Talent’ (2017), and ‘Doubt’ (2017). In 2017, she starred as ‘Felicia’ in the American comedy-drama film ‘Freak Show’ directed by Trudie Styler. The film saw its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival and received mixed to positive reviews from critics. She continued to star in films like ‘Can You Keep a Secret?’ (2019), ‘Charlie's Angels’ (2019), ‘Bad Hair’ (2020), ‘Promising Young Woman’ (2020), ‘Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen’ (2020), and ‘Jolt’ (2021). She was last seen playing the role of ‘Kacy Duke’ in the American drama streaming television miniseries ‘Inventing Anna’ in 2022.
Cassie, a medical-school dropout, lives with parents and works as a waitress.
