James Arness is best known for his role as Marshal Matt Dillon in the Western drama series ‘Gunsmoke’ (1955 – 1975). His other television appearances include his roles as 'Deputy Bud Titus' in the Western drama series ‘The Lone Ranger’ (1950), 'Zeb Macahan' in the Western ‘The Macahans’ (1976), and 'Jim McClain' in the crime drama ‘McClain’s Law’ (1981 – 1982). His portrayal of 'Zeb Macahan' in the epic Western series ‘How The West Was Won’ (1977 – 1979) made him a household name.Â
Arness received wide acclaim for several of his performances, such as 'Peter Holstrom' in ‘The Farmer’s Daughter’ (1947), 'Garby' in ‘Battleground’ (1949), 'Floyd Clegg' in ‘Wagon Master’ (1950), and 'Robert Graham' in ‘Them’ (1954).Â
He featured as 'Matt Dillon' in the series of films ‘Gunsmoke: To the Last Man’ (1987), ‘Gunsmoke: The Last Apache’ (1990), and ‘Gunsmoke: The Long Ride’ (1992).Â
