Issa Rae marked her debut as an actor and producer in 2011 with the launch of her comedy web series ‘The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl.’ The series aired 25 episodes and ran for 2 years, from February 3, 2011, to February 28, 2013. The show also won the ‘Shorty Award’ for ‘Best Web Series.’ In 2013, she created the dramedy web series ‘The Choir.’ The series saw its premiere on Youtube and followed the story of a group of African-American choir members and their lives in the United Church of Holy Christ. ‘The Choir’ ran for 2 seasons and aired its final episode on May 13, 2015.
After producing series and television films like ‘So Jaded’ (2014), ‘Words with Girls’ (2014), ‘First’ (2014-2015), and ‘Get Your Life’ (2015), Rae came out with the comedy-drama series ‘Insecure’ in 2016. The series earned universal acclaim upon release and earned a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. The show’s fifth and final season premiered in October 2021. Rae made her big-screen debut in the 2018 drama film ‘The Hate U Give’ where she played the role of ‘April Ofrah.’ The film opened to critical acclaim with critics praising the performance of the cast. She went on to appear in films like ‘Little’ (2019), ‘Hair Love’ (2019), and ‘The Photograph’ (2020).
Rae was last seen playing the role of ‘Leilani Brooks’ in the 2020 American romantic comedy film ‘The Lovebirds’ directed by Michael Showalter. While the critics had mixed feelings about the film, they praised the performance of Rae. She is all set to appear in the upcoming American computer-animated superhero film ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One).’ Rae will also feature in the upcoming American horror-thriller film ‘Vengeance.’
