Actor-comedian Arthur William Matthew Carney began his career as comic-singer on radio-show ‘Pot o’ Gold’ (1939), and made film debut in film-version of same (1941).
Carney played various roles on radio/TV-series ‘The Morey Amsterdam Show’ (1948-1950). He began appearing in Jackie Gleason’s sketches, forming a team for comedy-skits in series ‘The Jackie Gleason Show’ (1952-1957, 1966-1970). Further, Carney starred alongside Gleason, reprising their popular skit-characters, ‘Bus-driver Ralph Kramden (Gleason)’ and ‘sewer worker Ed Norton (Carney)’ in hit TV-show ‘The Honeymooners’ (1955-1956), earning fame and six ‘Primetime Emmy Awards.’ He also recorded ‘The song of the sewer,’ which became a hit.
Carney appeared in TV-series ‘Playhouse-90’ (1957-1959), as ‘Santa’ in ‘The Twilight Zone’ (1960), ‘The Dina Shore Chevy Show’ (1961), ‘The DuPont Show’ (1963-1964), and as ‘The Archer’ in ‘Batman’ (1966). He starred in successful TV-special ‘Art Carney Meets Peter & the Wolf’ (1958). He hosted his own variety-show ‘Art Carney Special’ during 1959-1960.
Carney starred in drama-film ‘The Yellow Rolls-Royce’ (1965), comedy-film ‘A Guide for the Married Man’ (1967). His portrayal of elderly ‘Harry Coombes’ in road-movie ‘Harry and Tonto’ (1974) won him ‘Academy Award’ and ‘Golden Globe Award’ for Best Actor.
Carney appeared in TV-series ‘The Virginian’ (1970), Muppet TV-special ‘The Great Santa Claus Switch’ (1970), and TV-movies ‘Happy Anniversary & Goodbye’ (1974), ‘Death Scream’ (1975), and ‘Katherine’ (1975).
Carney’s feature-film appearances include ‘W.W. & the Dixie Dancekings’ (1975), ‘Won Ton Ton: The Dog Who Saved Hollywood’ (1976), and as ‘a detective’ in neo-noir mystery-film ‘The Late Show’ (1977) which fetched him accolades. He essayed ‘a police chief’ in crime-drama TV-film ‘Lanigan’s Rabbi’ (1976), and also series based on it (1977).
In 1978, Carney starred in comedy-drama film ‘House Calls,’ double-movie feature ‘Movie Movie,’ and ‘Star Wars’ spinoff TV-special ‘Star Wars Holiday Special.’ 1979’s heist-comedy film ‘Going in Style’ fetched him acclaim for role of senior citizen teaming up for bank-robbery. In TV-film ‘St. Helens’ (1981) he portrayed ‘Harry Truman.’
Carney further appeared in TV-films ‘Ringo’ (1978), ‘Alcatraz: The Whole Shocking Story’ (1980), and ‘The Night They Saved Christmas’ (1984). His later starrers include comedy-film ‘Better Late than Never’ (1983), drama-film ‘Terrible Joe Moran’ (1984), ‘The Muppets Take Manhattan’ (1984), thriller-film ‘The Naked Face’ (1984), sci-fi/horror ‘Firestarter’ (1984), comedy-crime film ‘Izzy & Moe’ (1985), as ‘grandfather’ in ‘Where Pigeons Go to Die’ (1990) which fetched him Emmy nomination. His last movie was action-comedy ‘Last Action Hero’ (1993).
