The story focuses on a simple peasant, who has recently relocated to the Indian city of Kolkata in search of job. One night, while looking for water to quench his thirst he enters an apartment complex. But the residents take him to be a thief and chase him while he tries to hide in different apartments, in course of which he becomes witness to a wide range of middle-class greed and corruption.

Awaara is a crime drama film which tells the story of Raj, a petty thief, who was forced to turn to crime due to his life of poverty. He kills his employer after his mother is attacked. He is arrested, but soon, he finds himself in a shock to discover that the judge is his estranged father. However, his father is not aware of this fact.

A spoilt rich girl runs away from home, after her father disapproves of her relationship with the man she likes. However, she meets and falls in love with another man, Sagar, a simplistic journalist. This proves to be a turning point in her life. 

Barsaat tells the story of a naive village boy, who is attracted towards his classmate Tina, who belongs to a rich family. Although she starts to reciprocate his feelings, her father disapproves of their relationship, and gets the boy arrested on false charges.   

Although he is just a friend to Neena, Dilip is in love with her and is shocked to find her engaged to Rajan. However, he continues with the association even after they get married so that the other man does not suspect anything. But Rajan comes to know about it by accident and thinks Neena is unfaithful to him, leading to death and heartburn. 

Deedar is a romantic musical film which tells the story of a visually impaired man named Shamu, who decides to look for his childhood sweetheart, while also earning a living by singing. Despite the fact that her father opposed the relationship years ago, he continues to look for her.

After learning that she has a sister named Mohini, Roop decides to welcome her into her home. Things however get complicated when Mohini falls for Roop’s fiancé, a lawyer named Rajkumar. However, Rajkumer loves only Roop and shuns Mohini, which turns her love into bitterness.  

Aag is a musical romance film, which tells the story of Kewal, a young man, who is thrown out of his house, after he fails his law exam. He eventually meets Rajan, who helps him work towards his dream of becoming a theatre actor.

Vijay is an orphaned atheist who falls for Meeradevi, a married religious woman. However, she not only rejects him, but asks him to stay away from her. When she falls ill, he eventually gets close to her, and she finds herself drawn to him as well. She begins to tell him how she was coerced into marrying a much older man by her brother, and why she decided to forsake all materialistic bonds.

Manju is a young girl living in a village, with her father and stepmother. She likes a boy named Mohan, who is her friend since childhood. However, things get ugly when Mehkoo, a retired army-man, enters their lives. He spreads rumors about Mohan and gets Manju married to an older ailing man.

A man returns to his home only to find that wife and his son are missing. He comes to the conclusion that they have left him, and he begins to think and regret about his past deeds.  

Roopa is a young woman belonging to a poor and abusive family living in a slum. A neighbor named Raj comes to her aid and helps her, after which she soon begins to develop feelings for him. However, her problems eventually drive her to the point of suicide, when she is saved by an artist named Ashok. He asks her to model for him, and over time, Ashok starts to like her. Things get complicated when Raj re-enters her life.

Raj Raibahadur lives in Allahabad with his widowed father who is a businessman. His father finds him a prospective bride named Chandra, and asks him to write letters to her. Raj starts writing, but he is unaware of the fact that it is Neelu, Chandra’s sister, who is responding to his letters, and eventually falls for him.

Ashok is a young man from a wealthy family who works as a postmaster. Bela, the simple daughter of the former postmaster, strives for his affections. However, she faces competition from Usha, the daughter of a wealthy landowner, who seems to be more suitable for Ashok.
