Kim Bodnia started his acting career with the minor role of a bouncer in the Danish film ‘En Afgrund af frihed’ in 1989. He subsequently appeared on stage in the role of Patrick Bateman in an adaptation of ‘American Psycho’ in 1991. Two years later, he returned to on-screen roles starring in the Danish short film ‘Bulldozer’. In 1994, he made his television debut in a supporting role in the telefilm ‘Eva’ and appeared in a breakthrough role in Ole Bornedal's critically acclaimed thriller film ‘Nattevagten’, for which he won a ‘Robert’ for ‘Male Supporting Actor of the Year’ at the ‘Danish Film Awards’. Nevertheless, it took him two more years to bag his next role, that of controversial drug dealer Frank, the lead character in Nicolas Winding Refn's debut crime thriller film ‘Pusher’ (1996). The film was a critical success locally and internationally, and spawned several sequels, as well as remakes in other languages.
Following a supporting role in the action-drama film ‘Den sidste viking’ (‘The Last Viking’, 1997), Bodnia again collaborated with Winding Refn for another lead role in the 1999 crime drama film ‘Bleeder’, for which he again received critical acclaim. He next appeared in the lead role of Harald in Danish director Lasse Spang Olsen’s action comedy film ‘In China They Eat Dogs’ (1999). The film was a huge success and started a string of collaborations between the two, including its sequel ‘Old Men in New Cars’ (2002), as well as the children’s film ‘Jolly Roger’ (2001), the crime-comedy ‘Inkasso’ (2004) and the action comedy ‘Den Gode Strømer’ (‘The Good Cop’, 2004), the last of which he also co-wrote with the director. Around this period, he appeared in a number of Norwegian films such as the drama thriller ‘Øyenstikker’ (‘Dragonflies’, 2001), the comedy drama ‘Himmelfall’ (‘Falling Sky’, 2002), the sports drama ‘Monstertorsdag’ (‘Monsterthursday’, 2004), as well as the short film ‘That Kind of Man’ (2005). He went on to have supporting roles in the Danish drama film ‘Opbrud’ (‘Lost and Found’, 2005) and the Canadian-Danish movie ‘The Journals of Knud Rasmussen’ (2006). He next participated in Mick Øgendahl’s 2006 tour for a hybrid performance of stand-up comedy and fiction. He had his first role in the Swedish miniseries ‘Snapphanar’ in 2006, followed by guest appearances in the Danish television series ‘Forbrydelsen’ (2007) and ‘Hvor fanden er Herning?’ (2009). He further acted in several short films including ‘Out’, ‘Brackish Water’, ‘Boy Meets Girl’, ‘Because I Love You’ and ‘XY’.
In the late 2000s, Kim Bodnia appeared in a few Danish thriller films like ‘Ekko’ (‘Echo’), ‘Frygtelig lykkelig’ (‘Terribly Happy’) and ‘Kandidaten’ (‘The Candidate’), apart from the fantasy adventure film ‘Vølvens forbandelse’ (‘Timetrip: The Curse of the Viking Witch’) and the comedy film ‘Julefrokosten’ (‘The Christmas Party’). In 2010, he appeared in the Norwegian films ‘Tomme tønner’ and ‘Sebastians Verden’, and the Danish films ‘Min bedste fjende’, ‘Hævnen’, ‘Caroline: Den sidste rejse’ and ‘Sandheden om mænd’. He was cast in the main role of lead homicide detective Martin Rohde in the Nordic noir crime series ‘The Bridge’, which he portrayed in 20 episodes of the first two seasons of the series in 2011-13. In 2011, he played Russian mafioso Vladimir Dragunsky in the Indian Bollywood film ‘Delhi Belly’, apart from appearing in the Norwegian gangster comedy film ‘Tomme tønner 2 - Det brune gullet’ and the Danish crime-thriller series ‘Den som dræber’. The following year, he briefly featured in the German crime series ‘The Inspector and the Sea’ before appearing in the Danish romantic comedy ‘Love Is All You Need’ and the French drama ‘Rendezvous in Kiruna’, and also acted in the Norwegian short film ‘Mamma er en superhelt’. His film credits in 2013 included the crime-comedy ‘All for Two’, the crime-thriller ‘Skytten’, and the romantic drama ‘A Very Unsettled Summer’.
2014 was an important year for Kim Bodnia who portrayed the titular role of the Iranian interrogator in the American political drama film ‘Rosewater’, appeared alongside Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence in the French-American romantic drama film ‘Serena’, and starred in the Norwegian mystery-thriller film ‘The Veil of Twilight’. Also that year, he appeared in the Danish TV series ‘Skæg med matematik’. Following an appearance in the British short film ‘Far’ in 2015, he worked in the Swedish thriller film ‘The Name of the Game’ (2016) and the Bulgarian drama film ‘Light Thereafter’ (2017). In 2017, he further made guest appearances in the Danish comedy series ‘Nipskanalen’ and the Norwegian horror series ‘Jul i Blodfjell’, and starred in the short film ‘Walter & Alma’. The next year, he landed the main role of Konstantin Vasiliev in the British spy thriller series ‘Killing Eve’ (2018-22), which earned him a ‘British Academy Television Award for Best Supporting Actor’. His other notable television roles were as Abbot in British fantasy adventure series ‘The Letter for the King’ (2020) and as Vesemir in the second series of the Polish-American fantasy drama series ‘The Witcher’ (2021). His recent film appearances were in the Finnish romance-drama ‘The Violin Player’ (2018), the Canadian drama film ‘One Day in the Life of Noah Piugattuk’ (2019) and the British crime-thriller ‘Nefarious’ (2022). Furthermore, he has been cast in the upcoming movies ‘After the Harvest II’, ‘Young Woman and the Sea’, and ‘Ann-Christin's, Oslo’.
