Ingmar Bergman was a highly acclaimed film maker from Sweden. He gave classics like ‘Wild Strawberries’ (1957), ‘The Silence’ (1963), ‘Cries & Whispers’ (1972), ‘Fanny & Alexander’ (1982), ‘Scenes From a Marriage’ (1973) etc. to the world of cinema.
Also a writer, producer and theatre director, Ingmar is known to be one of the greatest and most powerful film personalities of all time. He made his debut as a writer in 1944 with the movie ‘Torment’. He made his directorial debut in ‘Crisis’ (1946).
His first successful movie came in 1955 (‘Smiles of a Summer Night’) that received ‘Palm d’Or’ at Cannes in 1956. Many of his movies made to the ‘Academy Awards’, and three of them, namely ‘The Virgin Spring’, ‘Through a Glass Darkly’ and ‘Fanny & Alexander’ won under ‘Best Foreign Movie’ category in 1960, 1961 and 1983, respectively.
His other successful movies include ‘The Seventh Seal’ (1958), ‘Winter Light’ (1962), ‘Persona’ (19622), ‘Shame’ (1968), ‘Autumn Sonata’ (1978), ‘Faithless’ (2000) etc.
His not so successful movies would be ‘The Serpent’s Egg’ (1977), ‘This Can’t Happen Here’ (1950), ‘All These Women’ (1964) etc. His top grossing movie is ‘Persona’.
