David Paul Cronenberg is considered to be one of the pioneers of the ‘biological-horror’ or ‘body-horror genre’. His movies explore violent body transformation and psychologically disturbing imagery. However, he also explored other movie-making genres. He started his career in filmmaking with short films like ‘Transfer’ (1966) and ‘From the Drain’ (1967). The following year, David directed another science fiction film ‘Crimes of the Future.’ He went on to direct films like ‘Shivers’ (1975), ‘Rabid’ (1977), and Fast Company’ (1979).
The year 1979 saw the release of the David Cronenberg-directed body-horror film ‘The Brood.’ The film received positive reviews from critics with some describing it as Cronenberg’s best film yet. In 1983, Cronenberg came out with another body horror film ‘Videodrome’ which earned him the ‘Canadian Screen Award’ for Best Director. The film opened to a positive reception but could not achieve success at the box office. In the years that followed, David Cronenberg came out with more successful hits such as ‘The Fly’ (1986), ‘Dead Ringers’ (1988), ‘Naked Lunch’ (1991), ‘Crash’ (1996), ‘eXistenZ’ (1999), ‘Spider’ (2002), ‘A History of Violence’ (2005), and ‘Eastern Promises’ (2007).
Apart from directing, David Cronenberg has also acted in several films such as ‘Into the Night’ (1985), ‘Nightbreed’ (1990), ‘Trial by Jury’ (1994), ‘Henry & Verlin’ (1994), ‘To Die For’ (1995), ‘Last Night’ (1998), ‘Jason X’ (2001), ‘Barney's Version’ (2010), ‘Disappearance at Clifton Hill’ (2020), and ‘Falling’ (2020).
