Alfonso Herrera made his screen debut in the 2002 Mexican romantic drama film ‘Amar te duele,’ directed by Fernando Sariñana. The film received positive reviews from critics. That same year, he also became a part of the main cast of the Mexican telenovela ‘Clase 406,’ created by Diego Vivanco, Sandra Rita Paba, and Ana María Parra. He played the role of ‘Juan David Rodríguez Pineda’ and remained a part of the show until it went off-air in 2003. He continued to star in television series and shows such as ‘Mujer, Casos de la Vida Real’ (2004), ‘Rebelde’ (2004-2006), ‘La Energía de Sonric'slandia’ (2005), ‘RBD: La Familia’ (2007), ‘Lola, Érase Una Vez’ (2007), and ‘Terminales’ (2008).
In 2009, he joined the main cast of the Mexican neo-noir vigilante heist thriller telenovela ‘Camaleones’ as ‘Sebastián Jaramillo.’ The show aired 135 episodes before going off-air in 2010. Herrera continued to star in television series like ‘El Equipo’ (2011), ‘El Diez’ (2011), ‘El Encanto del Águila’ (2011), ‘La Ciencia de lo Absurdo’ (2014-2021), ‘El Capo’ (2014), ‘Sense8’ (2015-2018), and ‘El Dandy’ (2015-2016). In 2016, he became a part of the American supernatural horror television series ‘The Exorcist,’ created by Jeremy Slater. Herrera played the role of ‘Father Tomas Ortega,’ which earned him the ‘Bloody Disgusting Reader's Choice Award.’ The series was canceled after 2 seasons in 2017. He was next seen in television series like ‘Queen of the South’ (2018-2019), ‘Sitiados: México’ (2019), ‘Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya’ (2019-2020), and ‘Cómo Sobrevivir Soltero’ (2020). Herrera was last seen playing the role of ‘Javier "Javi" Elizonndro’ in the American crime drama streaming television series ‘Ozark’ in 2022.
