Herbert Manfred ‘Zeppo’ Marx, the youngest of the five ‘Marx Brothers,’ joined the family’s comedy stage-act in 1918 when older brother Gummo left to join the army. As he was working with the ‘Ford Motor Company,’ he did not wish to join the act, but he was persuaded by the teams’ mother, Minnie, to join. He subsequently teamed up as ‘Straight Man’ and the romantic lead in vaudeville and Broadway acts and also featured in the first five films of the Marx Brothers.
Marx’s first screen appearance was in the short film ‘Humor Risk’ (1921), but the unreleased film is feared to have been lost. He travelled with the family vaudeville troupe and was part of their popular revue ‘I’ll say She is’ (1923) and the hit ‘The Cocoanuts’ (1925).
Marx starred in a small role in the silent comedy film ‘A Kiss in the Dark’ (1925), and was noticed even in the small role. Further, he starred in Mark Brothers’ adventure-comedy-musical film ‘The Cocoanuts’ (1929), followed by their family comedy ‘Animal Crackers’ (1930).
In the next musical-comedy ‘Monkey Business’ (1931), Marx and his brothers were stowaways on a cruise ship. The comedy about university football matches, ‘Horse Feathers’ (1932), saw Marx play elder brother Groucho’s son and render a song ‘Everyone Says I Love You,’ fetching appreciation. The 1933 musical-comedy ‘Duck Soup,’ considered as the best of Marx Brothers’ movies, was the last film he appeared in.
Marx left the group to form talent management company with Gummo, and also earned name for designing wristwatch that monitored pulse rate and clamping devices for bombing raids.
