Takashi Miike made his directorial debut with the 1991 Japanese action film ‘Lady Hunter: Prelude to Murder.’ The same year, he also directed the action comedy film ‘Eyecatch Junction’ written by Akio Takemoto and Hiro Masaki. While it was Miike’s second film, Eyecatch Junction was released before Lady Hunter: Prelude to Murder. He next directed films like ‘A Human Murder Weapon’ (1992), ‘Bodyguard Kiba’ (1993), ‘Shinjuku Outlaw’ (1994), ‘Bodyguard Kiba: Apocalypse of Carnage’ (1994), ‘Bodyguard Kiba: Apocalypse of Carnage 2’ (1995), ‘Shinjuku Triad Society’ (1995), ‘Ambition Without Honor’ (1996), ‘Fudoh: The New Generation’ (1996), ‘Ambition Without Honor 2’ (1997), ‘Rainy Dog’ (1997), ‘Andromedia’ (1998), and ‘Blues Harp’ (1998). In 1999, Takashi Miike directed the Japanese horror film ‘Audition.’ The film received favorable reviews from critics and holds an 81% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It later came to be considered one of the best horror films ever made. In 2000, Miike directed the Japanese horror crime television series ‘MPD Psycho.’ The show was inspired by Eiji Ōtsuka’s manga series of the same name. He next directed the 2001 Japanese action film ‘Ichi the Killer’ written by Sakichi Sato. The film received a 65% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes.
He continued to direct films such as ‘Kumamoto Stories’ (2002), ‘Shangri-La’ (2002), ‘Gozu’ (2003), ‘Yakuza Demon’ (2003), ‘Zebraman’ (2004), ‘Ultraman Max’ (2005), ‘Waru’ (2006), ‘Crows Zero’ (2007), ‘Detective Story’ (2007), ‘God's Puzzle’ (2008), ‘Yatterman’ (2009), ‘13 Assassins’ (2010), and ‘Ninja Kids!!!’ (2011). In 2012, he directed the Japanese legal comedy-drama film ‘Ace Attorney’ written by Takeharu Sakurai and Sachiko Ōguchi. The film received mostly positive reviews from critics and grossed over ¥540 million at the box office. He next directed films like ‘Shield of Straw’ (2013), ‘As the Gods Will’ (2014), ‘The Lion Standing in the Wind’ (2015), ‘Terra Formars’ (2016), ‘Blade of the Immortal’ (2017), ‘Laplace's Witch’ (2018), ‘First Love’ (2019), ‘Secret × Heroine Phantomirage!’ (2020), and ‘Bittomo × Heroine Kirameki Powers!’ (2021).
