David Lean was an English film director, producer, editor, and screenwriter. He is best remembered for directing some great epic films, such as ‘The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), ‘Doctor Zhivago’ (1965), and ‘A Passage to India’ (1984). He started his career as an editor and eventually found his way into filmmaking. After editing more than 200 films, he finally made his directorial debut in the 1942 film ‘In Which We Serve.’ Some of his best directed films are ‘This Happy Breed’ (1944), ‘Brief Encounter’ (1945), ‘Great Expectations’ (1946), ‘Oliver Twist’ (1948), ‘The Passionate Friends’ (1949), ‘The Sound Barrier’ (1952), ‘Summertime’ (1955), and ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ (1962). He earned 11 ‘Academy Award’ nominations, winning twice in 1958 for ‘The Bridge on the River Kwai’ and in 1963 for ‘Lawrence of Arabia.’ He also won three ‘Golden Globe’ awards out of five nominations.
