Ariadna Gil Giner made her film debut in ‘Lola’ (1986) after she was discovered by the Spanish film director Bigas Luna. She then starred in ‘El complot del Anells’ (1988), ‘Un submari a les Tovalles’ (1990), ‘Capitan Escalabons’ (1990), and ‘Barcelona Laments’ (1991). Most of these films were mainly in Catalan-language with little of Spanish and French.
Gil’s starring role in the Spanish romantic-comedy ‘Amo tu cama rica’ (1992) by Emilio Martinez Lazaro brought her recognition and the ‘Best Acting Award’ at ‘Ondas Awards.’ After ‘Mal de Amores’ and ‘El columpio,’ her lead role in the comedy-drama film ‘Belle Epoque’ (1992) won her the ‘Goya Award for Best Lead Actress.’
She next appeared in many films, including the Spanish comedy ‘Todo es Mentira’ (1994), ‘Mecanicas celestes’ (1994), the comedy film (written by then husband David Trueba) ‘Los peores anos de nuestra vida’ (1994), and ‘Tranvia a la Malvarrosa’ (1996) amongst others.
Gil’s titular role in ‘Malena es un nombre de tango’ (1996) brought her ‘Best Actress Award’ at ‘Butaca Awards’ & ‘Verona Love Screen Film Festival.’ She starred in director Vincent Aranda’s historical-drama film ‘Libertarias’ (1996), followed by the Spanish romantic-drama ‘Lagrimas negras’ (1998), which fetched ‘Best Actress Award at Valladolid International Film Festival.’
Gil’s further starrers include ‘Talk of Angels’ (1998), the French film ‘Don Juan’ (1999), the Spanish romantic-drama ‘Second Skin’ (1999), the crime film ‘Camera obscura’ (2000), and Trueba’s comedy drama ‘Masterpiece’ (2000). Her performance in the Argentine drama film ‘Nuts for Love’ (2000) earned her ‘Best Actress Award’ at the ‘Havana Film Fest.’
Thereafter, Gil appeared in the Spanish dark-comedy ‘Torrente-2: Mission on Marbella’ (2001), the French comedy ‘Jet Set’ (2001), ‘The Shanghai Spell’ (2002) and more. She won the ‘Ace Best Actress Award’ for her lead role in Trueba’s drama film ‘Soldados de Salamina’ (2003), and another award at ‘Fantasporto-2007’ for the film ‘Ausentes’ (2005). She earned ‘Goya Award’ nominations for Spanish epic fiction war-film ‘Alatriste’ (2006) and the acclaimed drama-film ‘Solo quiero caminar’ (2008).
Gil also appeared in Guillermo del Toro’s fantasy-film ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ (2006), the comedy drama ‘Welcome Home’ (2006), ‘Una estrella y dos cafes’ (2007) and others. She starred in films of different countries, including American Western ‘Appaloosa’ (2008), the Danish film ‘Room 304’ (2011), the Mexican-Canadian comedy-drama ‘Treading Water’ (2013), and internationally co-produced romantic-drama film ‘Parking’ (2019).
Gil starred in the TV series ‘Cuentame como paso’ (2014), the political-thriller series ‘Aqui en la Tierra’ (2018-2020) amongst others. Her later films include ‘El Baile de la Victoria’ (2009), Trueba’s ‘Living it easy with Eyes Closed’ (2013), the war film ‘Zona Hostil’ (2017) and ‘Solo una vez’ (2021).
