Stephen Chow was first seen in the 1988 Hong Kong crime film ‘Final Justice,’ directed by Parkman Wong. Chow won the ‘Golden Horse Award’ for his performance in the film. That same year, he also made his television debut with the Hong Kong modern comedy television drama ‘My Father's Son’ where he played the role of ‘Tang Ka Fat.’
He went on to appear in television series and films such as ‘The Final Combat’ (1989), ‘Just Heroes’ (1989), ‘Dragon Fight’ (1989), ‘Love Is Love’ (1990), ‘My Hero’ (1990), ‘Lung Fung Restaurant’ (1990), ‘Legend of the Dragon’ (1990), ‘Crazy Safari’ (1991), ‘God of Gamblers II’ (1991), ‘Fight Back to School’ (1991), ‘God of Gamblers III: Back to Shanghai’ (1991), ‘Fist of Fury 1991 II’ (1992), ‘Justice, My Foot!’ (1992), ‘King of Beggars’ (1992), and ‘Fight Back to School III’ (1993).
Chow made his directorial debut in the 1994 Hong Kong spy comedy film ‘From Beijing with Love’ where he also played the role of ‘Ling-ling-chat.’ The film received a positive response in Taiwan and grossed over HK$37 million at the box office. In 1995, he starred as ‘Sun Wukong / Joker’ in the Hong Kong fantasy-comedy film ‘A Chinese Odyssey Part One: Pandora's Box,’ directed by Jeffrey Lau. The film grossed over HK$25 million at the box office. That same year, he reprised his role of ‘Sun Wukong / Joker’ in ‘A Chinese Odyssey Part Two: Cinderella,’ the second part of the two-part Honk Kong film, ‘A Chinese Odyssey.’ The film earned over HK$20 million at the box office.
He next directed films like ‘Forbidden City Cop’ (1996), ‘The God of Cookery’ (1996), and ‘King of Comedy’ (1999). In 2001, Chow starred as ‘Sing / Mighty Steel Leg’ in the Hong Kong sports comedy film ‘Shaolin Soccer,’ which was also written and directed by him. The film received positive reviews upon release and was a commercial success, grossing over US$42.8 million on a budget of US$10 million. He next directed films like ‘Kung Fu Hustle’ (2004), ‘CJ7’ (2008), ‘Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons’ (2013), and ‘The Mermaid’ (2016). In 2019, he wrote, directed, and produced the Chinese comedy-drama film ‘The New King of Comedy.’ The film grossed over US$106.6million on a budget of $8 million.
