Prithviraj Sukumaran made his debut in the 2002 Indian Malayalam-language romantic drama film ‘Nakshathrakkannulla Rajakumaran Avanundoru Rajakumari’ directed by Rajasenan. That same year, he also appeared in the Indian Malayalam-language romantic fantasy film ‘Nandanam.’ The film was a critical and commercial success. He went on to star in films like ‘Vellithira’ (2003), ‘Meerayude Dukhavum Muthuvinte Swapnavum’ (2003), ‘Vellinakshatram’ (2004), ‘Akale’ (2004), ‘Albudhadweep’ (2005), ‘Krithyam’ (2005), and ‘Ananthabhadram’ (2005). The year 2006 saw the release of the Indian Malayalam-language romantic political crime drama film ‘Vaasthavam’ where Sukumaran played the role of ‘Balachandran Adiga.’ The film received mostly positive reviews from critics. Sukumaran also received the ‘Kerala State Film Award’ for his performance in the film, becoming the youngest recipient of the award. The following year, he starred as ‘Shyam Balagopal’ in the Malayalam-language romantic comedy film ‘Chocolate’ directed by Shafi. The film earned praise from critics and did decent business at the box office.
In 2008, he was seen playing the role of ‘Akbar Ahammed’ in the Malayalam romantic drama film ‘Thirakkatha’ directed by Ranjith. The film garnered positive reviews from critics and went on to receive the ‘National Film Award’ for Best Feature Film in Malayalam. He next appeared in films like ‘Nammal Thammil’ (2009), ‘Kerala Cafe’ (2009), ‘Punyam Aham’ (2010), ‘Thanthonni’ (2010), ‘The Thriller’ (2010), ‘Arjunan Saakshi’ (2011), ‘Veettilekulla Vazhi’ (2011), and ‘Teja Bhai & Family’ (2011). He made his Bollywood debut in the 2012 Indian Hindi-language parody film ‘Aiyyaa’ directed by Sachin Kundalkar. The film received mixed to negative reviews from critics and was a box office bomb. Nevertheless, Sukumaran received the ‘Zee Cine Award’ nomination for his performance in the film. He went on to receive the IBNLive Movie Award for his portrayal of ‘ACP Arya Phogat’ in the 2013 Indian Hindi-language action thriller film ‘Aurangzeb’ directed by Atul Sabharwal. Despite opening to mixed reviews, the film failed at the box office.
He continued to appear in films like ‘London Bridge’ (2014), ‘Tamaar Padaar’ (2014), ‘Picket 43’ (2015), ‘Ennu Ninte Moideen’ (2015), ‘Paavada’ (2016), ‘James & Alice’ (2016), ‘Adam Joan’ (2017), ‘My Story’ (2018), ‘Ranam’ (2018), ‘Brother's Day’ (2019), ‘Lucifer’ (2019), ‘Ayyappanum Koshiyum’ (2020), and ‘Bhramam’ (2021). He was last seen in the 2022 Indian Malayalam-language comedy-drama film ‘Bro Daddy.’ He was also the director of the film. ‘Bro Daddy’ was released on Disney+ Hotstar and received a positive response from critics. Sukumaran is all set to appear in the upcoming Indian Malayalam-language period action thriller film ‘Kaduva’ directed by Shaji Kailas.
