Gladys Louise Smith, professionally known as Mary Pickford, was a Canada-born American film actress and producer who was one of the founding members of ‘Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.’ The ‘girl with curls’ played a significant part in the development of filmmaking in Canada during the 1910s and 1920s. She was also one of the most popular actresses of that time.Â
Nicknamed as ‘the Queen of the Movies,’ Mary had a long career that spanned more than 50 years.Â
Coming from a family of theatre artists, Mary struggled for six years, and got her first ‘Broadway’ role when she was on the verge of quitting her acting career. She landed a supporting role in the 1907 Broadway play ‘The Warrens of Virginia’ and gradually found her way into films.Â
Some of her films are ‘Daddy-Long-Legs’ (1919), ‘Pollyanna’ (1920), ‘My Best Girl’ (1927), and ‘Coquette’ (1929). She retired from acting in 1933.
