Louis Jourdan (born Louis Robert Gendre), known for playing dynamic and appealing characters, began his acting career on stage. His debut French film ‘Le Corsaire’ (1939) remained unfinished due to WWII.
Jourdan featured in French-Italian film ‘La Comedic du bonheur’ (1940), French-comedy ‘Premier rendez-vous’ (1941) followed by drama-film ‘L’Arlesienne’ (1942), romantic-comedy ‘The Beautiful Adventure’ (1942), ‘The Heart of a Nation’ (1943), drama-film ‘Twilight’ (1944), ‘La Vie de Boheme’ (1945), and more.
Thereafter, Jourdan appeared alongside Gregory Peck in Alfred Hitchcock’s courtroom-drama ‘The Paradine Case’ (1947). He received critical praise for his performance in romantic-drama film ‘Letter from an Unknown Woman’ (1948) opposite Joan Fontaine. Â
After an unsuccessful comedy-film ‘No Minor Vices’ (1948), Jourdan appeared in romantic-drama film ‘Madame Bovary’ (1949). In 1951, he starred in adventure-drama films ‘Bird of Paradise’ and ‘Anne of the Indies.’ This was followed by comedy-drama film ‘The Happy Times’ (1952), anthology-film ‘Decameron Nights’ (1953) and French film ‘Rue de l’Estrapade’ (1953).
Next, Jourdan played ‘a prince’ in romantic-comedy ‘Three Coins in the Fountain’ (1954) and ‘Dr. Nicholas Agi’ opposite Grace Kelly in unsuccessful romantic-comedy-drama ‘The Swan’ (1956). In 1955, he played ‘Insp. Beaumont’ in TV-series ‘Paris Precinct’ and appeared in TV-series ‘Climax’ (1955) and ‘Celebrity Playhouse’ (1956).
In 1956, Jourdan starred in successful film-noir ‘Julie,’ and in French-comedy ‘The Bride is Much Too Beautiful.’ He further appeared in adventure-film ‘Escapade’ (1957) and historical-drama ‘Dangerous Exile’ (1957).
The multiple ‘Academy Award-winning’ musical romantic-comedy ’Gigi’ (1958), wherein Jourdan played lead with Leslie Caron and Maurice Chevalier, proved his most popular starrer earning him ‘Golden Globe’ nomination. His next film ‘The Best of Everything’ (1959), too, was a commercial success.
Jourdan’s further films include musical-film ‘Can Can’ (1966), peplum film ‘Amazons of Rome’ (1961), major hit French version of ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ (1961), comedy-drama ‘Disorder’ (1962) and others. His successful starrer ‘The V.I.P.s’ (1963) was followed by romantic-comedy ‘Made in Paris’ (1966), then French-Italian films ‘The Sultans’ (1967), biopic ‘Cervantes’ (1967) and Hollywood’s ‘To Die in Paris’ (1968) and ‘A Flea in her Ear’ (1968).
He further starred in ‘Silver bears’ (1977), ‘Swamp Thing’ (1982) and its 1989 sequel, a negative-role in James Bond film ‘Octopussy’ (1983). Jourdan also appeared in several TV-films including 1969’s ‘Fear No Evil’ and ‘Run a Crooked Mile,’ title-role in ‘Count Dracula’ (1977) amongst others.
His last film appearance was in romantic-comedy ‘Year of the Comet’ (1992).
