Johnny Weissmuller was an Austro-Hungarian-born American actor, model, and swimmer. He was known for his role as ‘Tarzan,’ the ape man. He was the sixth actor to play the iconic character and the most popular one as well. He made his first feature film appearance in ‘Glorifying the American Girl’ (1929) as ‘Adonis.’ He made his debut as ‘Tarzan’ in the 1932 film ‘Tarzan the Ape Man.’ Overall, he starred in 12 ‘Tarzan ‘films, including ‘Tarzan Triumphs’ (1943), ‘Tarzan and the Huntress’ (1947), and ‘Tarzan and the Mermaids’ (1948). His other popular role was of ‘Jungle Jim.’ He portrayed the aforementioned character in films such as ‘The Lost Tribe’ (1949), ‘Fury of the Congo’ (1951), and ‘Jungle Man-Eaters’ (1954). His final film performance came in ‘Won Ton Ton, the Dog Who Saved Hollywood’ (1976). He reprised his role as ‘Jungle Jim’ in a TV series of the same name, from 1956 to 1958.Â
